Record Approval Lows for Bush, Cheney in U.S.

http://www.angus-reid.com/polls/index.cfm/fuseaction/viewItem/itemID/8668

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Support for George W. Bush fell this month in the United States, according to a poll by Harris Interactive. 40 per cent of respondents have a positive assessment of the president’s performance, down five points since June.

The approval rating registered by Bush this month is the lowest of his tenure in a Harris Interactive survey. The American president had his best showing in October 2001 with 88 per cent.

Backing for vice-president Dick Cheney also dropped this month. 35 per cent of respondents have a positive assessment of Cheney’s performance, down three points since June. Cheney’s numbers also represent an all-time low. The highest approval for the American vice-president in a Harris Interactive survey was 69 per cent in October 2001.

Bush—a Republican—earned a second four-year term in November 2004. Yesterday in Idaho, Bush explained his rationale on the Iraq coalition effort, saying, "The battle lines in Iraq are now clearly drawn for the world to see, and there is no middle ground. Transforming a country that was ruled by an oppressive dictator who sponsored terror into a free nation that is an ally in the war on terror will take more time, more sacrifice, and continued resolve." 37 per cent of respondents believe things in the United States are going in the right direction, down nine points since January.

5. Why is it so high?

35% is "whopping" when it refers to cheney. It really couldn't be much more than 10-15%
