THE COOL THING ABOUT BEING REPUBLICAN
You can have your VERY OWN set of facts in a totally separate alternate reality!

In Republican World (TM), outing a CIA agent to punish her husband for speaking out against Bush is a clever political maneuver, while voicing any criticism of the war in Iraq or the war on terror is blatantly unpatriotic, treasonous and outright indefensible.

In Republican World (TM), lying about WMDs and 'fixing intelligence around war plans' that ultimately killed more than 1,800 troops and up to 100,000 civilians does nothing to damage the reputation of the US, but a Newsweek article that causes riots and approximately 15 deaths is the scandal of the century.

In Republican World (TM), getting over 200 of your judicial nominees approved while seven of the most extreme and incompetent are blocked is an unconstitutional and un-American farce while blocking or bottling up in committee SIXTY SEVEN of Clinton's nominees was good politics.

In Republican World (TM), your kids won't have to pay down a multi-trillion dollar national debt, only kids of liberals have to contribute.

In Republican World (TM), you are biologically immune to mercury and arsenic poisoning and can gleefully endorse the continued dumping of these toxins into the environment as it will cause peripheral neuropathy and a host of other diseases only in liberals.

In Republican World (TM), you get affordable health care and don't have to worry about going bankrupt because of catastrophic medical bills, even as HMOs are recording record profits and are paying their CEOs up to $124 MILLION / year, while at the same raising rates between 15% and 30% year over year.

In Republican World (TM), lying about a blowjob is an impeachable offense, but lying about WMD and sending troops to die is the patriotic duty of the Commander in Chief.

In Republican World (TM), a woman with a liquified cerebral cortex is reason enough to get agitated and proclaim to belong to a 'culture of life', while ignoring a whole genocide in Darfur is not considered rancid hypocrisy.

I liked that ... to be fair, though, there was some outcry among a few Republicans (no links handy) about the Darfur thing. Not nearly as much noise as they made about Schiavo though.

6. Here's another one:
In Republican World (TM), it's okay for billionaire cranks like Richard Mellon Scaife and Rev. Sum Myung Moon to fund dozens of media-manipulating conservative think tanks and foundations secretly, but George Soros pledging a few million to assist anti-war efforts explicitly is tantamount to a Communist takeover of the US.

7. Alt + 0153 = ™
While holding down your ALT key, type "0-1-5-3" on your numeric keypad (the "calculator" keys on the right of most keyboards). That will give you the trademark sign, nice and compact and superscripted.

You can get a lot of those special symbols; just find an ASCII chart, and they'll be handy when you need them.

And welcome to DU, too! Excellent piece!

13. Here's the "€1|t€ h@X0®" details
http://clubweb.interbaun.com/fenske/charmaps.pdf (Acrobat -- charts for printing)

http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codealt.html (another easy-reading chart)

http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm

http://www.csun.edu/itr/guides/ascii-chart.html

http://www.origins.tv/htmlataglance/characters.htm

If you're looking for more, click here for the Google search.

You can also use Windows' "Character Map" program and cut-and-paste symbols. If you don't have a shortcut to it, look in your System32 directory or search for the file named "charmap.exe" and make a shortcut manually.

Have fun!

14. Thanks...
Actually, I am a bit of a coder, so I was aware of the keyboard shortcuts, escape sequences, etc., but clearly your information was helpful to others, so, good goin'!

Without the actual ™ symbol the text also becomes a bit easier to cut-n-paste (as it remains pure ASCII), should anybody feel inclined to do so. ;)

17. Microsoft now has a keyboard mapping program
If you're a coder, you may enjoy using it if you have Win2k or XP. It's available for free at http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx -- I've used it to make, among other things, a Dvorak keyboard that can handle the special letters for Esperanto and Volapük.

Unfortunately, I have not figured out how to make special code page symbols or Unicode work on the on-line forums like DU -- it may not be possible on most fora. But the whole ASCII set is available, and it's a lot easier to use than most people realize.

My own coding experience is mainly in Visual Basic, but I also programmed medical software in dBaseIII+ back in the late '80s. Which means that I am often underemployed these days and have lots and lots of time for DU :)

36. The very best thing about Republican World is
You don't have to care about anyone else!! All those nights other people stay up worrying about the poor, the sick, the starving....it's all for naught; Those people brought it all on themselves, don't ya see. There are plenty of jobs and food and abundance available for everyone, everywhere! Anyone who doesn't take advantage of them is just lazy. So you see, there's no need to worry your pretty little head about anything but what you're going to watch on TV tonight!

It's by Tom Tomorrow, one of my very favorites. It's on this page at Working For Change:
http://www.workingforchange.com/comic.cfm?itemid=19510

The image below may take a few extra seconds, occasionally as much as half a minute, to display. It's worth the wait. (I am routing through a free public cache to spare the original site bandwidth usage. If it is just too slow for you, you can bypass this routing by deleting the .nyud.net.8090 in the link URL.) The title of this cartoon is "Averting Their Eyes."

And congratulations on getting a post onto the DU Home Page so early in your DU career! That is quite a feat and bodes well for your future contributions.

So next time we are in power, we will give them a Quadrillion $ debt! it will make this trillion $ debt look like NOTHING. We know how to spend money better than THEY do!

For starters, we could end poverty in Africa.

"In Republican World (TM), you are biologically immune to mercury and arsenic poisoning and can gleefully endorse the continued dumping of these toxins into the environment as it will cause peripheral neuropathy and a host of other diseases only in liberals."

Even in the midst of all their other blunders, the Rethugs' environmental legacy will probably be seen as their worst "contribution" to the country long-term. Fouling streams and rivers, permanently ruining wetlands, choking up the air, failing utterly to move away from fossil fuels-- the GOP has truly punted it on this one.

43. A few more
In Republican World, you're a Patriot if you support an unethical war and a traitor if you oppose it.

In Republican World, you're a Patriot if you never fought for your country but send others to war, and a traitor if you did fight for your country and later speak out against it.

In Republican World, a true Christian is one who threatens to kill the leader of another country whose policies he/she disagrees with.

In Republican World, a fair and honest election is one where exit polls indicate that more people voted for Candidate B, but Candidate A is declared the winner based on tallies by electronic voting machines that: a)break down frequently, b)are programmed by people with close ties to one of the candidates, c)the programming code is kept secret, and d)no paper records of the voting counts are maintained, so actual recounts are impossible later on.

In Republican World, you choose to protect human life prior to birth and withhold all support after the birth.

Apparently, John Bolton thinks that UN reform isn't so important, after all, such as safeguarding womens' rights, addressing the Kyoto Protocol, corporate responsibility, etc. You can thank the Huffington blog for this fine catch.

47. What's so hard to believe is...
...that I have made these same comparisons at the Christian printing agency where I work and it falls on deaf ears with the christian employees. I mean, they have such an amazing ability to ignore the facts and repeatedly respond with "Bush is a good man, because he's a christian." Like the republican spin we hear, when presented with a fact they don't like you get: "I don't believe that."

WE all see the truth of what you say.
WE KNOW they continue to perpetuate this lie that is costing lives.
WE KNOW they are trying to create a theocracy
WE KNOW this is the real Bush:

The question is, how do we get THEM to see what we see?
