Ken Fucking Mehlman urging supporters to call senators TODAY on Estate Tax
The Republican Party's priority? The estate tax

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html?blog=/politics/war_room/2005/09/02/mehlman/index.htmlhttp://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html?blog=/politics/war_room/2005/09/02/mehlman/index.html

The U.S. Senate approved $10.5 billion in emergency disaster relief for Katrina last night, and the House of Representatives is expected to approve the measure this morning.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman has other priorities in mind. In an email he sent yesterday, Mehlman called on the Senate to eliminate the estate tax. And he urged his supporters to call their senators -- "today" -- to demand that they get on board with the plan. The message arrived in our inbox at just about the same time Scott McClellan was pushing away criticism of the president by saying, "This is not the time for politics."

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has asked Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to table talk of the estate tax in the wake of Katrina, saying that members of the Senate "would have great difficult explaining why we were debating the estate tax during our first days back when we know hundreds of thousands of families are suffering."

What should Washington be doing next? A poster at Daily Kos has put together the kind of agenda that neither the president nor Senate Democrats seem capable of developing on their own: Provide funding to restore transportation along the Gulf Coast by cutting five percent across the board from the pork-laden transportation bill Bush just signed; postpone enactment of the bankruptcy bill for six months in areas hit by the hurricane; and restore funding for flood control throughout the nation by imposing a one percent sur-tax on incomes in excess of $250,000.

2. JESUS CHRIST DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND
He has commitments to funders to worry about! These forces are powerful, and it would surprise me very little (not at all actually) if this is exactly what the Senate votes on today!

10. This Mehlman guy is the most shameless liar I have ever seen
I mean, there is not a trace of discomfort in his face when he is spinning his garbage on TV. None. Lying appears to be a normal, natural, completely comfortable part of Mehlman's personality.

12. The Club for Growth is running ads, too
I sent them an email on Tuesday about how sickening and dishonest their little ad campaign is. Curiously, I haven't heard back from them. Maybe if I'd led my email off with "Pay to the Order of." They really like people with lots and lots of money.

13. This is definitely on the greedy bastards' agenda.
I got a letter from Santorum on Wednesday explaining why we had to eliminate the "death tax" and make all of Bush's other tax cuts for the rich permanent.

Their hubris apparently knows no bounds. It is incredible to me that they don't feel that the timing of this is inappropriate given the people dying for want of basic human necessities, the expense of Bush's war, the exploding deficit and now the high cost of fuel.

If this isn't glaring proof that they don't give a DAMN about anyone but their wealthiest campaign contributors, I don't know what it is.

14. Actually this is good timing for us - that Mehlman is so tone deaf
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 04:19 PM by karynnj
The Republicans have always spoken about tax cuts as returning your money back to you -as if the government stold the money. Now, you see there are things the government needs to do - that individuals can't do for themselves.

No matter how self sufficient you are, you can't take on a job as emmense as cleaning up after a hurricane or in creating and maintaining an adequate levee system. I had an economics teacher point out that it may have taken the great depression to create support for SS and unemployment compensation. Only when you see that it allows YOU to count on the overall stability of our economy if you sink. It's an insurance policy.
