Because if the pipelines were down, it would take weeks or months to repair them.
In the interim, we'd have trouble with gasoline and producing heating fuel for the upcoming winter, difficulty with electricity production.
It's an intelligent and reasoned thing to be concerned about. One of the 20,000 or so that come to mind.
