4. Why not cut them some slack?
Nobody is limitlessly adaptable, and it's good when people know their limits, isn't it? These people are trying to help in their tiny way--they're not just sitting there voyeuring. Give them some credit for that.

If I were in a position to offer shelter, I'd have preferences and limits, too. They wouldn't involve marriage or skin color, but that's just me--I'd be just as clear about not wanting to shelter someone whose kids aren't well-behaved, for example.

5. It also could be the neighbors.
My boss is considering putting her spare cabin up on one of these sites to offer aid, but is having second thoughts because the cabin is in the thick of Appalachia and everyone surrounding her is a member of the KKK.

She said she would feel just awful if some unfortunate black family took her offer and then encountered a worse fate there.

And before someone asks how she stands it, well, she's white and they never give her any trouble. In fact, because there is NO person of color in the area, race is rarely mentioned.

8. Your boss should let the people who need assistnace make the choice
after fulling informing them of the local situation.

She shouldn't use that as an excuse to not offer help.

She's kind of letting herself off the hook by saying her generositiy would manifest itself but for someone else's ignorance.

9. We didn't really think about that option.
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 02:09 PM by Clark2008
When I go back to my office (I'm covering for a co-worker in another location), I'll see if she'd like to do that.

Like I said, she's still considering it, even though my other co-workers and I told her it might result in future financial problems for her should something happen (she can't get insurance on the cabin because of it's remote location).

She is just worried that it might not be comfortable to those she would attempt to comfort.

7. This is the sentiment that is part of the root cause of this crisis.
Americans see black citizens as a lower class.

That's why we tolerate so much poverty and that's why nobody cared to evacuate people without cars. That's why Republicans had a relatively easy time of destroying the tax base and spending it on Halliburton contracts instead of infrastructure.

I can't believe people are making apologies for this.

I wonder if some DU'ers would think differently about this thing if a Democrat were president? Would you be making excuses for not evacuating poor people? Would you be saying that the victims were responsible for their own problems?

22. Not a lower class: a LOWER CASTE, like the "untouchables" in India
That's the root of the problem

16. Racist scum!
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 02:22 PM by StopThePendulum
Now I see why the NOLA hurricane relief effort has been inadequate: most of the victims are black! Racist scum!
Now this so-called Christian family won't even practice what they preach and overtly are turning away black victims! I'm white and appalled by this un-Christian racism!

BTA, I can understand their turning blacks away because they live near white supremacists and thus, fear for the safety of blacks. But this ad doesn't mention this crucial detail.

18. Would it have been better if they hadn't offered anything?
What would have been gained, had they sat back and not offered anything at all?

It seems to me that criticising these people for not being perfect is like criticising someone for being cheap because they can only afford to donate $25.

17. Heartbreaking. But let's be fair -- Bush didn't CAUSE this racism,
but he most certainly has helped make it "okay" to be overt and blatant about it.

19. That's true, E, he didn't. In another time, these people would have
kept quiet and not made such an offer as this.

I'm having a hard time understanding why that would be better, though.

21. How many of you are opening up your homes to black victims?
Maybe these people are racist. That's very sad, if true. But I wonder how many here are willing to put up any families for the duration of the rebuilding effort? Stones get thrown aplenty on DU, though most here live in glass houses.

25. not gonna win a noble prize, but its an offer to help
it wouldn't do anyone any good if they got a respondent that caused problems because of racial friction. some people with that attitude won't help because they won't take a chance on "getting a black family".

besides, there's probably many racist christian families that will respond. white christians need help too, and may turn out to be just as big a headache down the road.
