What a Difference a Day Makes...
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 04:14 PM by Totally Committed
Just got off the phone with my new son-in-law's parents.

Yesterday, even they -- RW Evangelical Christian Bush-loving sheeple from Utah -- were angry as hell at him. Didn't like his lack of leadership. Didn't think he was "doing enough" to help "those poor people." That was yesterday.

Today, after seeing him "ride into town with all those supplies and 'rescue' those people", they are again proud to say they voted for him, and would do so again given the chance. He was "A good Christian man after all".

What in godsname do you say to people like this? I just don't understand it.

I despise Bush, and everyone in his administration, and maybe even his Party. I don't like what they say, do, how they act, nor do I share their views on nearly anything. Anyone who is even the least bit familiar with any of my posts knows this, so when I say what I am about to say, please know it is not admiration, but a sense of awe that makes me say: Karl Rove and Karen Hughes are maybe the most adept PR Shrubber could ever have found. They took the most incredibly horrendous human tragedy I have ever seen in the USA, and the hate and disgust that was building up for the absent President, and turned it around in less than 24 hours. Every Republican talking head or spokesperson is speaking in talking points like automatons. And all the blame is deftly being shifted away from Bush.

He is about to come out of this smelling like a rose. Sure, those of us who are very informed are still furious. But, I have to tell you, those who are just regular people and especially those who were Bush voters in the first place... they are ALL going to forgive him. Mark my words, by the end of this LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND, no one is going to be pissed at Bush but us. Even the MSM is already back in the Bushies pockets, and serving up a non-stop Bushie love-in.

I am disgusted!

1. Where was he on Tuesday?
Playing golf, and strumming a guitar.

It's too late to save thousands of lives now.

3. I know that, and you know that, and I really care
about those poor people, but are we the only ones? (I mean we here on the Democratic and Progressive blogs...)

It seems like the Bush supporters (why there are any still left is beyond me!) are "moving on with their lives" now that their hero President has shown up and "rescued" (?!?!?!?) those "poor people".

Makes me shudder.

4. I doubt the people of MS, AL, and LA
Are the willing to give him a free pass on this. Those are three states his crappy leadership have now put in play for 2006 and 2008.

Watch the Dems fuck it up like they always manage to do.

6. You can't get too angry at them. Today's media blitz was a real mind fuck
It was well designed for both domestic and international consumption. Domestically, people had been worried sick for 4 1/2 days over dying people in a flooded ghost town. Today's media blitz was designed to relieve the emotional turmoil---the equivalent of "THe United States Marines have arrived!"

All the right images were shown: rescue vehicles, food and water trucks, people being airlifted out--a drop in the bucket, but effective PR. The pix of Bush hugging people--including two African American girls. (I'll bet ol' Bill told him to do that.) Whoever is handling spin in the White House is a master at it. The faithful came back to the fold; the angry middle of the roaders responded to the emotion and decided he was a hero; the liberals got mad because the real message of this whole thing got lost, but the message wasn't for us anyway. The international community got an image--whether they believe it or not--of a President in charge who cared for his people.

The only people who weren't fooled were those who have kept very informed about the issues, those of us who would vote for a banana slug before we'd vote for Junior, and the African American community who knew very well they had been left for days and resented being used for a photo op. I saw those tired people on CNN: one raised a hand to tiredly and bleakly wave, but the rest didn't look at the camera, knowing that they were being used.

And how many people are still dying? We didn't see them today, so we don't know.
