W. finally landed in Hell and chuckled about his wild boozing days...
in "the great city" of N'Awlins. just what the people of this city need: forget food and water; evacuation and medical care; security and hope, a fucking joker president and photo ops.

United States of Shame

By MAUREEN DOWD
Published: September 3, 2005

Stuff happens.
And when you combine limited government with incompetent government, lethal stuff happens.

<<snip>>

W. drove his budget-cutting Chevy to the levee, and it wasn't dry. Bye, bye, American lives. "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," he told Diane Sawyer.

Shirt-sleeves rolled up, W. finally landed in Hell yesterday and chuckled about his wild boozing days in "the great city" of N'Awlins. He was clearly moved. "You know, I'm going to fly out of here in a minute," he said on the runway at the New Orleans International Airport, "but I want you to know that I'm not going to forget what I've seen." Out of the cameras' range, and avoided by W., was a convoy of thousands of sick and dying people, some sprawled on the floor or dumped on baggage carousels at a makeshift M*A*S*H unit inside the terminal.

Why does this self-styled "can do" president always lapse into such lame "who could have known?" excuses.

Who on earth could have known that Osama bin Laden wanted to attack us by flying planes into buildings? Any official who bothered to read the trellis of pre-9/11 intelligence briefs.

Who on earth could have known that an American invasion of Iraq would spawn a brutal insurgency, terrorist recruiting boom and possible civil war? Any official who bothered to read the C.I.A.'s prewar reports.

Who on earth could have known that New Orleans's sinking levees were at risk from a strong hurricane? Anybody who bothered to read the endless warnings over the years about the Big Easy's uneasy fishbowl.

1. His wild boozing days? You mean the month of August?
Oh, sorry - he meant New Orleans, not just Crawford...

2. Absolutely fucking disgusting.

I hope he burns in hell for this. Louis XVI did more for HIS people.

3. So Horrible You Don't Even Know How to Respond Anymore
This whole situation just gets more bizarre all the time; the comment doesn't even make sense. Of course you anticipate a breach of the levees--why does this drunken asshole think they were built to begin with? This is why we maintain them and don't cut the budget for it, because then they will not hold--the city of New Orleans is below sea level, right next to a lake, and in the general path of hurricanes. What is mysterious here?

The whole response, as has been mentioned, is the worst that has ever been made by any U.S. government to anything ever. Nothing was done until the whole world started screaming about it. This is just unbelievable. The rapes, riots and other violence in the huge New Orleans stadium, a horrible and dehumanizing way to detain people, and not allow them their pets (with the macabre "explanation" that they might spread disease, from a group of neo-cons that has not decontaminated the open sewage that is New Orleans, yet), then sending people, en masse, to another huge stadium in Texas, just the worst and most traumatizing experience for these people who have lost all. At the very least, they should have been sheltered in small, more personal and secure groups, not these huge, disorganized swarms that invite gang-type behavior.

Days and days of Bush and McCain, etc. laughing and joking, avoiding Cindy Sheehan, vacationing...they really are the worst thing you could've accused them of being; and this was all implicit in their "philosophy" right from the start. "Starve the government," and we will all die.

11. It was one of the best things she's written in some time.

I read it to my husband today.

I feel like emailing Maureen Dowd and saying "Happy now? You got the guy you wanted. Aren't you glad you spent all that time sneering at that boring, stiff, pointy-headed liberal dweeb Al Gore during Campaign 2000, because he wore earth tones?" She was merciless on Gore. Snide as can be. He was so unlike the kind of aw-shucks, good ol' boy bush - with whom we could all go have a nice beer (OF COURSE, THIS qualifies him to be president about as well as being a blithering idiot who got fired from running the International Arabian Horse Association qualifies a guy with no emergency response or disaster management experience to head FEMA). Sooooooooooo, she got what she wanted. I hope she's pleased with the results.

12. Go ahead and email it to Dowd
I can't get excited when she bashes Smirk, because she's just going to blast our 2008 candidate with the same sort of snarky, lazy columns. She's not on our side. It took the total destruction of NOLA, Gulfport, and a host of other towns on the Gulf Coast to make her notice that Smirk is an opportunist sleezebag.

When will we hold the media accountable?

7. He's Insane
I generally try to avoid psychoanalyzing political figures, apart from generally assuming that anyone who wants power is unworthy of it. But I have reluctantly--but definitely--come to the conclusion that Bush isn't simply just another yahoo Republican type, but a true psychopath. It's his odd inability to seem human, to connect with anyone...and the fact that the *only* time he's ever articulate and relaxed seems to be when he's talking about killing people...has anyone else ever noticed this? God knows, it's not unprecedented for US Presidents to be mental cases. Wilson, LBJ, and Nixon were all obviously mentally cracked by the end of their administrations. But the convolutions of this man's cracked skull seem to me to be in a class by themselves...:-(...

10. Welcome to DU!
And yes, I, too, have noticed. It's been brought up here before - how animated he suddenly becomes when talking about death, killing, bombing, and executing. Did you happen to notice how, much earlier this week, he made some public remarks about the hurricane, and then HAD to throw in an extended blather about how wonderful the war in Iraq was and how much it means to all of us to stay the course. He read the hurricane part haltingly, emptily, in such a flat, wooden, detached manner you would have thought he was reading a grocery list. Then he switched to the war and came alive.

Yes. Psychopath. Sociopath. Dry drunk. And maybe, anymore, he's not-such-a-dry dry drunk. That's my suspicion. Just a really miserable excuse for a human being.
