Did I hear this correctly, FOX says that it is the fault of
the Governor of Louisiana that the Guard and relief supplies did not arrive until now. they've got to be kidding! Is this the beginning of the spin? A little rovian twist?

1. Hurricane Spin
It seems appropriate enough. What did you expect, for Fox to actually report what's happening?

18. They always send O'Reilly and Rush out with the spin to test the waters.
If it sounds like some people will buy it, then it becomes a major talking point and EVERYONE STAYS ON POINT after that. Evidently they got enough "takers" to go with the point.

4. I've heard this for several days
even on non-political boards. They are also blaming the mayor of NO. I've tried to debunk as fast as I can, because Gov. Blanco DID ask for help...and the mayor couldn't order the Guard around.

6. The Governor didn't make the phone call.
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 04:21 PM by fasttense
Don't you know the feds can't act without that call and the feds say they never got that phone call. Oh wait phones now-a-days work in both directions. So the feds could have called and asked, "Are you covered for Katrina?" So instead of making one lousy phone call, we let thousand die and suffer. Bureaucrats at their best. But do you really believe the feds, when they say they didn't get the call, when they are the ones who showed up five days late????

Why the Levee Broke

By Will Bunch, Attytood

09/01/05 "AlterNet" -- -- Even though Hurricane Katrina has moved well north of the city, the waters continued to rise in New Orleans on Wednesday. That's because Lake Pontchartrain continues to pour through a two-block-long break in the main levee, near the city's 17th Street Canal. With much of the Crescent City some 10 feet below sea level, the rising tide may not stop until until it's level with the massive lake.

There have been numerous reports of bodies floating in the poorest neighborhoods of this poverty-plagued city, but the truth is that the death toll may not be known for days, because the conditions continue to frustrate rescue efforts.

New Orleans had long known it was highly vulnerable to flooding and a direct hit from a hurricane. In fact, the federal government has been working with state and local officials in the region since the late 1960s on major hurricane and flood relief efforts. When flooding from a massive rainstorm in May 1995 killed six people, Congress authorized the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, or SELA.

Over the next 10 years, the Army Corps of Engineers, tasked with carrying out SELA, spent $430 million on shoring up levees and building pumping stations, with $50 million in local aid. But at least $250 million in crucial projects remained, even as hurricane activity in the Atlantic Basin increased dramatically and the levees surrounding New Orleans continued to subside.

Yet after 2003, the flow of federal dollars toward SELA dropped to a trickle. The Corps never tried to hide the fact that the spending pressures of the war in Iraq, as well as homeland security -- coming at the same time as federal tax cuts -- was the reason for the strain. At least nine articles in the Times-Picayune from 2004 and 2005 specifically cite the cost of Iraq as a reason for the lack of hurricane- and flood-control dollars.

11. That doesn't fly because:
1. She did ask for help even before the hurricane - that's been adequately documented, I believe.

2. Forget about Louisiana - were they just as slow in the other states? And this is a real no-win question for them. If they were swifter to get to Alabama and Mississippi then it will look like Republican governors were serviced before Democrats and it will mean that they were INTENTIONALLY slower getting into LA. This is certifiable murder if they put politics before life. If they were equally slow into all three states then it most certainly can't be blamed on the governor of one.
