universal healthcare and domestic violence.
it is dean's positions on these two issue, and his proven track record on them that attracted me to dean from the get go.
however, i don't think people usually link these 2, but the plight of a friend of mine does link them for me.
you see, she is married to a scum bag and pervert. but she is in a very difficult financial position, and feels like she is stuck. she has a lot of health problems. not enough to qualify for any kind of disability benefits, but enough to make it very difficult to get a job. (she used to own her own business, but when she started having health problems, hubby stepped in to help. it quickly went down the drain.)
so, she is trapped, because he has employer provided health care.
she could depend on the county hospital here, which she did for a while, before he got this job. she had a problem that went very, very wrong there. so she is not to comfortable with that option. the type of healthcare that is available to the poor in this county (and country) is being squeezed to death by the lack of support it receives.
the need for healthcare keeps a lot of dependent people stuck in bad situations. it also keeps a lot of talented people stuck in jobs that are beneath their talents.
these things are a drag on our economy and our populace.
thoughts?

2. I am for universal health care
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 03:51 PM by Virgil
I guess you read about a week ago where the Nazi machine had the NIH come out for Universal Health Insurance. The system is gamed from pill prices and patents to the FDA now actually being funded by the pill companies. The insurance companies have risen rates 50% over 3 years. The system is gamed for the insurance companies as people that pay cash can pay two or three times what insurance companies pay. Now how is that fair?

And what happens when disability cost you your job. Gephart and Kucinich endorse universal health care. Kucinich says we are paying for it now with 15% of the GNP. We just are not getting it.

When Clinton tried to reform health care the industries attacked him badmouthing Canada that spends 6% GNP to treat everyone. It has problems of course but that is because it is under funded. If they spent 15% they would be picking people up at home for doctors appointments.

We know that any candidate that supports drug importation form Canada or universal health care will be bashed to the fullest. Universal health care needs to be a Democratic priority as the system is gamed for profits and not care.

3. Most Americans are for universal healthcare, too,...
according to the polls and research. Fully 60% of Americans support a universal, single-payer plan similar to that of Canada-- even 50% of self-identified Republicans support it.

I think this is a BIG winning issue for Dems, if our candidate (whomever it is) puts forth a SERIOUS proposal for a single-payer universal health coverage plan-- not just better "insurance", not just increased coverage, but truly UNIVERSAL coverage.

It will save us money within only a few short years, too. Businesses would love it because it would cost them only 7% (according to DK's plan) instead of 12%. Many businesses now have said they're creating more jobs overseas because they can no longer afford healthcare for American workers-- it has gotten that bad.

Universal healthcare is not just a medical issue, it's also an economical issue, too.
