Security is a conservative value, not a liberal one.

THAT is the perception in America today. It's the perception the right-wing has so careful nurtured for decades.

George Will enforced it at the end of his most recent column on the effects of Katrina today, an event which he believes will be more lasting than 9/11:

"So Katrina has provided a teaching moment. This is a liberal hour in that it illustrates the indispensability, and dignity, of the public sector. It also is a conservative hour, dramatizing the prudence of pessimism, and the fact that the first business of government, on which everything depends, is security."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9014028/

Do you see the infuriating framing of this? According to him, it is CONSERVATIVES who recognize the first business of government is SECURITY, and LIBERALS who provide the indispensable PUBLIC SECTOR. It is dichotomy that benefits the conservatives, because the first need of people is security.

BUT THE CONSERVATIVES ARE NOT PROVIDING THE SECURITY!

I've got news for George Will...he's right about Katrina being more socially and politically significant than 9/11. In many ways, it is undoing the ability of conservatives to continue to take advantage of the fear 9/11 left in it's wake. Americans are realizing that their SECURITY...economic, social, physical, depends on leaders who provide strong, effective leadership the PUBLIC SECTOR, and it's the Democratic Party, the party of of the PUBLIC SECTOR, that's in the position to provide that leadership.

Security is a DEMOCRATIC value and the first business of A LIBERAL DEMOCRACY!

2. The Entire Military Itself was Built Up by Only Democrats
America was a third-rate military power until Franklin Roosevelt built up the armed forces to make it the world's #1 superpower that we still are today; the military was increased or diversified by Kennedy and Johnson; Jimmy Carter presided over the succesful transition from a draft to an all-volunteer armed-force; Clinton upgraded the skills of the armed forces, as high-technology became common. All advances have been made by Democrats, from combat-readiness to good medical care for soldiers...and it has all been totally destroyed by the rich Republican drunk draft-dodger!

3. Republicans aren't conservative and Bush Republicans are criminal
incompetents. They failed on 9/11, they failed in Iraq, they failed on Domestic Infrastructure.

George Will is another one of those administration apologists that remind me of the guy who follows behind the elephants in a parade. His job is to scoop up the elephant poop. It's a shitty job, but it pays well.
