Petition Congress: Release Vacant Military Bases for Katrina Victims
http://www.petitiononline.com/10000008/petition.html

To: US Congress

This is a petition for the United States Government to release all closed military bases to provided temporary housing and hospital facilities for all Hurricane Katrina victims in need of shelter, food, water and health care.

Days have passed and critical basic commodities have not reached massive sections of disaster-torn areas in and around New Orleans and many other gulf coast regions. We are appalled at the lack of response given to people in the areas struck by Hurricane Katrina.

Please help mobilize these victims and give them due shelter, food, water and medical attention by using the already vacant military bases.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

1. I wrote my congressman, Van Hollen, re this last week
I pointed out to him that the (now-dismantled) Camp Kilmer Army Base in Edison NJ was used to house hundreds of refugees from the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. Why not house American refugees at military bases. There's probably lots of room with so many in Iraq.

4. A Great Idea
This is a fabulous idea, yet another thing that should have been done immediately and might have helped a lot, and yet another thing that the almost impossibly stupid "Bush team" never thought of, and is not capable of doing. I also signed this petition, and actually, I think this was a proposal made by Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco the other day. How different everything might have been for the victims, if there had been somebody intelligent and non-criminal in the Bush Administration.
