Rep. John Lewis: “I think all Americans should rise up and speak out.”
Rep. John Lewis: “I think all Americans should rise up and speak out.”
Rep. John Lewis, U.S. congressman from the Fifth District of Georgia calls for a Marshall-type plan to rebuild New Orleans in an OP/ED in Newsweek. Of the response from the Federal Government Lewis says, “But this is America. We’re not a Third World country. This is an embarrassment. It’s a shame. It’s a national disgrace.”

Lewis encourages Americans to rise up and speak out…

It’s very painful for me to watch and read about what is happening. I have a sense of righteous indignation. I think all Americans should rise up and speak out. It’s not like 9/11 that just happened. We saw this in the making. The media told us for days this storm was coming, and for years people have been telling us we need to do something to prepare. It took us so many days to make the full force of the government available afterward.

3. Except for the CBC, liberals have kept their mouths shut for 30 years.

Why change now? What the hell ... just let the fascist cretins spread their lies, bile, and ignorance for another 30 years. It'd be rude to say anything bad about the people who live in the short yellow ethics bus, right? Let the fascist-lites do all the ass-kissing. That way, real liberals don't even have to do their own puckering.

5. "It’s not like 9/11 that just happened."
i couldn't agree more with the sentiment expressed by Rep. Lewis ... that's exactly what is needed to address the NO catastrophe and much, much more ... citizens need to get educated and get involved ...

only as a minor aside to his main theme, i wish he hadn't added the gratuitous "It’s not like 9/11 that just happened." ... no, Rep. Lewis, 9/11 didn't "just happen" ... it happened for a reason ... and we did "see this (9/11) in the making" ...

Rep. Lewis's main point is dead on the money ... we have a real opportunity here to get a newly awakened public more involved in the affairs of their democracy ... his powerful point, notwithstanding his unfortunate and erroneous references to 9/11, is the only way we are going to change this country and the stranglehold "the evil ones" have on our government ...

6. Given the voracity of the storm...
Perhaps Lewis menat they could have gotten more people out of NOLA after it passed by, knowing that the water levels were rising in the lake. Don't know... just a thought.

7. yes, perhaps ...
i suppose it's true that it's not necessarily clear what he meant with his 9/11 reference ..

i just wanted to highlight the point that, contrary to the words he used, 9/11 very definitely did happen "for a reason" ... it didn't "just happen" ...

but his main point is something we should all strongly endorse ...
