SUSA tracking poll: Bush still dropping
by kos
Sun Sep 4th, 2005 at 19:38:06 PDT

The PR offensiive Bush and Co. have launched the past two days isn't stemming his freefall.

SurveyUSA. Daily tracking poll. 1,200 respondents each day.

Thinking just about the President of the United States ... Do you approve or disapprove of President Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina?

9/4 9/3 9/2 9/1 8/31
Approve 38 41 40 46 48
Disapprove 55 53 53 44 39

Bush's trip to the disaster area helped stem the collapse of his numbers for a day, but ultimately, people have realized the president's utter lack of leadership and effectiveness on the issue. Nominating horse lawyers to run FEMA, taking a week to send down the guard, playing a guitar and eating cake with McCain while the Gulf Coast drowned ... those aren't the sorts of things you can overcome with photo ops.

5. Through the floor and into the basement.
38% won't hold....there's more bad news coming from Katrina, Iraq, Plame, maybe 9/11, gas prices, the economy, Republican corruption, jobs. And that's just the stuff we know about.

He's headed for 33% territory. Now the Republicans in Congress have a real dilemma. Stay with George and show the voters they support incompetence, criminal negligence/dereliction of duty....and lose in 2006 or impeach the guy and maybe survive.

Democrats need to make the case for impeachment. They need to make the Republicans bottle it in committee or bring it to the floor. Either way, it's a loser for Republicans, sure to split and weaken their monolythic grip on power. It's time.

I'd love to see John Kerry take the point on this.

8. Southern disapproval higher than approval
This must be a first. The poll shows that Bush has a 48% disapproval vs. 46% approval in the South. Could be the results of such a huge jump in black disapproval, but the white disapproval ratings are going up steadily as well. Whites still tend to approve of Bush's performance more than any other ethnic group, with a 43% approval rating.
