11. Actually, maybe not.
He was adamant about not getting much publicity for this act. I'd support him in a heartbeat in 2008....but I fear the talking heads who trashed him so inexplicably in 2000 would manage to spin this genuinely fine act as grandstanding. Remember what they did to him five years ago..it was crazy and merciless.

16. The coverage yesterday by the media was actually objective
So I think, on the whole, it was a very positive press cycle and a very positive sign.

Haven from fury Mercy Flight Brings Evacuees to ET

Gore accompanies about 140 arrivals from New Orleans but declines to take credit

By ROBERT WILSON

(snip)

About 140 people - mostly elderly and infirm - arrived Saturday at McGhee Tyson Airport on a chartered mercy flight from hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, welcomed to East Tennessee by a bright sun and a host of medical professionals straining at the reins to help their fellow human beings without regard to whether they were on the clock.

The displaced hurricane victims came to Tennessee on a hastily arranged flight, accompanied by doctors and carrying whatever they had in boxes, bags or, in one case, an old suitcase tied up with rope.

Former Vice President Al Gore arranged the flight and was on board, but he declined to take credit for the airlift, fearing it would be "politicized."

Yes, AL is that, and more. How things would be different if the 2000 election hadn't been stolen.

10. We all know how different it would be if Al Gore were President
No Iraq, less dependence on oil, possibly no 9/11, and an actual and immediate response to Katrina.

12. I would SO vote for Gore before dreaming of voting for Hillary!
Wouldn't mind a Gore.Clark or a Gore.Dean ticket. We need LEADERSHIP in this country---that's the theme, IMO, for anyone running----and, if we're going to talk LEADERSHIP, we better put up a person who LEADS by EXAMPLE---it doesn't get any better than this.

Al Gore blasts Bush; personally airlifted Katrina victims
Friday, 09 September 2005
From The San Jose Mercury News
By TERENCE CHEA, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore urged Americans on Friday to hold the Bush administration accountable for failing to adequately prepare for and respond to Hurricane Katrina.

"When the corpses of American citizens are floating in toxic flood waters five days after a hurricane struck, it is time not only to respond directly to the victims of the catastrophe, but to hold ... the leaders of our nation accountable," Gore told environmentalists at the Sierra Club's national convention.

Gore had been scheduled to give a speech to state insurance commissioners in New Orleans this weekend about the likelihood that global warming will spawn increasingly deadly hurricanes. He decided to take his speech to San Francisco after that conference was canceled.

"The warnings about global warming have been extremely clear for a long time. We are facing a global climate crisis, it is deepening. We are entering a period of consequences," Gore said.
