63% of people in IDAHO are PRO-CHOIE?
http://www.surveyusa.com/SupremeCourtJuly05.htm

Okay, tell me if I'm reading this wrong. In the middle column it says who should be involved in the decission about abortion: The state government, the federal government, or neither.

In almost EVERY state, including the red states, it OVERWHELMINGLY says NEITHER. Two of the three most Republican states (Idaho and Wyoming) have OVER 60% of the population answer "neither". Even in Utah (which is basically a mormon theocracy) and the most Republican state in the country, 52% said neither.

So WHAT is going on here? Is this a poll with a huge error, or are pollsters perhaps just asking the wrong question when they ask are you pro-life or pro-choice?

3. There are lots of people who are personally opposed to abortion
but who don't believe the state should impose that on everyone.

Maybe that's what's happening here

4. So basically 63% of the people in Idaho shared Kerry's view on abortion
As did in excess of 60% in EVERY state in the country except for Utah. So how did Bush win on wedge issues like this? More importantly, how has any Republican since Reagan ever been elected to any office period?

5. Idaho is an independent state
tied to free rights. Several years ago, the right wingers in the house and senate approved a bill to ban abortion. The "common" people protested and the Dem governor vetoed the bill.

I asked a Mormon right wing friend as to whether Roe v Wade should be overturned and she said no way. Idaho is against government taking over states rights.

6. This has nothing to do with Idaho specifically, I use it as an example
According to the survey, over 60% of the people in almost EVERY red state are against a ban on abortion. Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, North and South Dakota, take your pick, they are ALL pro-choice states according to this poll.

7. choice is not the issue
the poll asks whether govt (state or federal) is the ultimate authority (has the last say). The question is -- who has the final say on this issue?

A) state
B) feds
C) none of the above

I'm sure the question can be interpreted a million different ways, i.e.,

"Govt should not interfere w/ a women's decision about her body"

vs.

"God has the final say"

The first statement is pro-choice, the second pro-life, but both could be the motivator for answering "neither" or C).

9. Even GOP Idaho took it to mean that the feds
should stay out of our personal lives, as in Schiavo.

8. It's the question. If it asked if they were pro life or pro choice
the answer would be different. Even if it asked if they supported a woman's right to reproductive choice the answer would be different.

16. I make it a point to not read sig lines
I kinda used to when big pictures were still allowed (because it wasn't avoidable), but reading sig lines takes away from my ability to do as many things at once as quickly as possible.

Spelling things correctly also does that too, hence the Choie.
