but maybe they waited so long so there would be more damage so Halliburton would have more work. According to the article, the former head of FEMA (the one before the Arabian horse expert, who brought him in) is now a lobbyist for Halliburton subsidiary.

11. I have been wondering...
Is there ANYTHING we can do to stop this? It is sickening to me and I feel like there should be some way to stop it. I have written emails about it, but I don't know the legality. Once a contract is awarded is there nothing to stop it from being a binding contract. Public outcry clearly doesn't help.

12. What congressional committee would...........
have anything to do with something like this? Maybe targeting them. I'm sadly ignorant about the specifics of our governmental process....but I'm learning.

What about SHAMING Halliburton in some way? Shaming them into paying displaced citizens a better-than-fair-market wage. From what I understand, Halliburton is simply a contractor that outsources the actual work. Shit, what isn't outsourced with these SOBs?

14. Not short term....no.....
but long term, get rid of the structure that allows no-bid contracts, get rid of the Congress that votes to allow tax-payer dollars go to 'cronies' of the Administration and get rid of a bidding system that creates contracts that smaller businesses cannot afford to bid on. In short, get rid of Bush, republican controlled Congress and those who structure the bidding process.

15. what about.............
some sort of action by We The People, an online petition perhaps, demanding full transparency of the activities of Halliburton, at least regarding the Gulf project (the US Gulf) and their hiring and salaries offered....demanding the priority be given to Gulf state displaced residents.

I know that's probably not very effective, but even if it's symbolic, just to show them that WE'RE WATCHING (them and the government) and we're fed up with the cronism and lying and corporate-controlled government. I'll need to research more about Halliburton and their subsidiaries. Maybe there's something to be boycotted, for goodness sake.

17. It could be done...but no response will come from the White House
I don't want to sound like Eeyore here, but nobody there cares. Their friends are making money, their DONORS are making money and when they're out of office I'm certain a job is waiting so that they can make money as well.

So we can do a symbolic petition that will get the same amount of press coverage as the fact that Halliburton got a $500 million down-payment on what will be a several billion dollar reconstruction effort. We didn't see this on Faux did we?

20. SHIT!
This is unbelievable...

So, what this says is the admin. was more concerned about getting the next big, fat contract for their cronies at Halliburton under the radar than getting a bottle of water to babies and grandmothers dying in the streets of NO.

Where's my pitchfork!

21. intro to Halliburton.........
Gotta love Wikipedia....

I thought others might want to begin to learn more about this company as well. We've heard the name over and over, but I, for one, honestly do not know much about them, other than their link to Cheney and the government contracts.

Like I said, this is only an intro....no real meat and potatoes, but I feel it's important to educate ourselves about this company and learn how far the tentacles reach.
