New film uses CIA files to puncture myth about Che
New film uses CIA files to puncture myth about Che
By Hugh Davies in Venice
(Filed: 07/09/2005)

The director Steven Soderbergh is to use recently declassified CIA files to make a £20 million film about Ernesto "Che" Guevara, which will culminate in the guerilla's bloody death in Bolivia.

The director is one of America's most innovative movie-makers, whose back catalogue includes Sex, Lies and Videotape, Erin Brockovich, an indictment of industrial malpractice, and Traffic, an epic of the drug wars.

The Argentinian-born revolutionary is to be played by Benicio Del Toro, Hollywood's leading Hispanic actor, who gained an academy award for his role as a policeman in Traffic.

Soderbergh said at the Venice Film Festival that he would be shooting the movie next spring after The Good German, a murder mystery set in post-war Berlin with George Clooney and Cate Blanchett. The director, who is noted for his cutting-edge approach to films, is likely to puncture the romantic myth of Guevara, who gained cult status for his role in the 1959 Cuban revolution.

1. Now, I'm no huge fan of Che, but I just have to ask . . . since when
are CIA files a valid source for puncturing myths? Hell, there's as much myth in any given CIA file as there is in an epic by Homer.

2. This is like using FBI files to puncture the "myth" of MLK
The CIA is hardly what you'd call a neutral observer, especially when it comes to Central and South America.

5. Che had the right instincts, wrong tactics.
Not that I'm a pacifist, but Che was woefully aloof to the people. He and his small-band mentality could not possibly integrate themselves with the poor peasants of Bolivia or the Congo or wherever else he sought to spread his brand of elitist "guerrilla war." That's why he was so easily captured in Bolivia.

that's the Telegraph's wishful thinking. They are right wingers - used to be owned by Conrad Black.

Soderbergh certainly isn't owned by Conrad Black.

and Del Toro wouldn't act in some RW propaganda piece.
