my confrontation with a co-worker ( a sean hannity wanna be)

I was making copies for my students the next hour of news articles about Katrina for current events discussion

another teacher was in and he asked me.

"do you think those that didn't leave NO were just waiting for their welfare check"

that was all it took.

I said the following:

"excuse me, I can't believe you would be that heartless"

he said again "well don't you think so"

I said
"those people have no money, no cars, no gas, no credit cards and no where to go. Where do you suppose they go? I then said "did you know that some turned down help because they thought it would cost them and they couldn't afford it" They thought they were going to die

He said..No where did you hear that.

I replied "if you would bother to watch anything other than fox news you would have heard it on any other station.


I then said "I HOPE YOU ARE NOT TAKING THOSE FEELINGS INTO YOUR CLASSROOM. 80% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE IN THE WELFARE SYSTEM AND PROBABLY 15% HAVE FAMILY MEMEBERS MISSING IN NO"

he stuttered and stammered and I was so disgusted I just had to leave the copy room and go back to my room and cool down before students came in

I know these confrontations are difficult since I have had quite a few. You have no other choice but to say something. If we say nothing at that ignorance, we are complicit in it also. I like to compare it to racism...if you hear something racist and you say nothing, you are equally guilty. We have to speak up. We are reaching some people. Also, thank you for teaching your students about this disaster. If all teachers were as open minded and compassionate as you are, it would be a beautiful world. God bless teachers and God bless you.

They were so disastisfied with your salary that they decided to recoup it and called your bank and had your house and your car repossed, and police are now guarding them so you can't return. 13. I had the same kind of conversation today

I'm a visiting nurse and was in the home of a wealthy woman who's child I've been treating. She mentioned that the survivors from N.O. were being given $2000 debit cards and said something to the effect that "I wonder what they'll be spending it on" with a nudge nudge wink wink kind of tone.
I told her they probably need clothes and toiletries above all else and that I doubted very much they'd be blowing it on the lottery or whatever.
There's so much casual racism around, it's a real gob-smacker at times.
