Watch those GOP talking points. Notta finger pointed at Barbour gov. MS
Edited on Wed Sep-07-05 10:46 PM by inthebrain
I am watching the talking points played out on other boards. It's interesting that the right is up to making fallacies up about Blanco and Nagin.

I find it disturbing that in this "states responibility" game not one finger pointed at Haley Barbour of MS. He wasn't exactly loading up the school buses to evacuate Gulfport and many other regions along the coast.

Bush calims that this isn't time for "pointing fingers" (funny how that's always the response when he screws up) yet that doesnt stop the right from playing politics with the dead, dying and suffering. They are trying desperatly re frame the debate in order to point fingers at Democrats.

There is one major peice missing from their puzzle. Haley Barbour just happens to be governor of the state of MS. Like I stated earlier, he wasnt "johnny on the spot" providing school buses for his citizens.

Key reason for this!!! Moving mass amounts of people out of the state via school buses requires.......MONEY!!!!!! Money to hire drivers and to fill those suckers up with gas!!!

Deflate this talking point now. If you want a good example of how they chicken away from the Haley Barbour aspect, check here.

2. Universal Karl Rove CYA formula
extended version:

Republicans at fault = We lose
Democrats at fault = We win
Republicans + Democrats at fault = government fails = privatize more = We win

shortened version: smear, smear, attack, attack

Any questions?

3. Very true....
except these talking points as of late are loaded with holes and lack consistency.

Like the one about Bush begging the mayor and governor to evacuate because he knew the severity of the storm. Afterwards he and his staff reamained on vacation for five days.

These talking points are an attempt to create an Orwellien Black hole. They are like all their others except this time they reek.

BAD!!!!

4. Excellent!
This ought to be hammered into all of those thick skulls out there - if the localities are at fault, then why isn't Barbour being blamed, too?

5. There was an earlier thread which quoted Haley Barbour from a
few years back stating he would never turn over his state to the government. Does anyone else remember seeing that? I just don't understand how the MSM has ignored asking why is Gov. Blanco the only one responsible when 4 states were involved. Anybody know if the other governors were asked the same thing and what their answers were?

6. Even more disturbing
Barbour thinks Bush did a great job responding. He also calims he had no time to act!!!!

This guy really needs to be thrown in the face of Republican blaming state and local officials.

8. Wasn't there something about him complaining early on, though
I thought I read that Barbour was initially complaining, and then did an about face change. I might have him mixed up with someone else, but I'm pretty sure it was him.

And then, he was on MTP/Russert following that harrowing tale by Arron Broussard, Jefferson Parish Pres. Barbour responded by saying something like, "well I don't know about LA, but our assistance from the feds was great...'

Jeesh. This 'my party right or wrong' shit is destroying our country. If he was complaining initially, and then changed his tune, what and who made him do that?

9. Haley still not getting food, water and the trailers into his own people.
Oprah Winfrey interviewing a young Mother with infant in MS. She had been separated from the rest of her family and she and her baby had been living in a makeshift and then when another fellow victim left they gave her a small camp tent. She was scrounging for her and her baby and she said military trucks and Red Cross would pass her by.

Someone else had posted previously that FEMA temporary housing/trailers for those that had lost their homes were parked outside the storm areas.

Haley Barbour, fat-rich, Gov from MS, continued with his traditional roll of ME, ME, ME. Whoever connected him to Pig from Animal farm got it right.

What a perfect photo of him ......fat little body with face of the Animal Farm Pig.....come the next election amidst actual pics of his people being victimized by both Katrina and the Pig.

10. The Republican talking points
falsly accsing Blanco, when she did all she could, are very applicable to Barbour. Trent Lott said in an interview that he thought the fed response was great as well.

They are also questioning why Nagin didnt utelize the school buses to get people out. As if the 9th poorest city in the united states has money to throw at Bus drivers at the last minute.

Meanwhile, if in Republican circles this is reasonable, where were the mayors of Gulfport and Biloxi. They didny use school buses to evacuate their cities.

12. This thread is sinking and shouldn't be. Every time we have a
request to "debunk" a RW talking point we should be pointing to this.

I read this at work and couldn't respond, but I applaud it. We need to push the press and the HF interns to say Governor Barbour in the same breath.

16. what get's me even more
Is that we have some here making calls for unity and I post something like this (which is very pertinent) and it gets ignored.

I could post thread after thread writing about how I am disatisfied with the Democratic response and get fifty replys. Meanwhile I post this and I have to bump five time in twenty-four hours.

Of course we are a little bit more on the offensive these days. Yet, there is a difference between us being on the offensive and getting the dem leadership on the offensive. They are the ones that should be all over the Republican attack on Nagin and Blanco.

Pointing out there hypocrisy in these talking is a start. I dont think Haley Barbour is anymore at fault than Blanco and Nagin. I think it's crazy that NO is the ninth poorest city, MS is the poorest state in the nation, and Republican think they have money around to hire extra Bus drivers to move people. Not to mention that they never say where they should be moved to!!!

The fault is highly on Bush and they know this. But if you want to know why Dems lose elections they should win, start with the poor response to this talking point!!!!

It's the easiest one to debunk.

21. Yes...it was up to the Feds to factor in what kind of response was
possible/likely in these poor areas anyway, wasn't it? Scarborough pointed out that a great job was done by the feds during the last FL hurricane, right before the Bush election. But I think you have it right...it all comes down to $$$. The Feds should have been able to predict this, and taken steps to mitigate the problems, no matter what the state/local folks did or didn't do.

13. I Also Wait Forever for Any Criticism of THEM
Exactly! They claim this disaster was a State or local responsibility, and so they blame and attack the Democratic Governor of Louisiana and the Democratic Mayor of New Orleans, yet if it were State and local, then why wasn't the Republican Governor of Mississippi and the Republican Governor of Alabama equally at fault and under attack, as equally, it would've been their faults too, as it was the same incident? Mississippi was the hardest hit area of all. Republican PR-spin filth never stops, even at the funeral.

14. Joe Scarborough just pointed a finger at Barbour
on Hardball. He gave credit to Jeb for his handling of the Florida hurricanes (of course maybe Jeb got lots of help there from *). He said that Brownie did well in Florida, too, and can't understand why he fell down on the job this time. He said that Giuliani knows nothing about hurricanes, and praised James Lee Witt.

and the government response. He will quietly accept and distribute the money and be a good soldier in the Bushco army.

What come sout of Haley Barbours mouth vs what is going on on the groud, are two very different things. His ass kissing Bush isnt improving the problem.

26. Nope. . .
the state of Mississippi didn't have one reference to using any buses to evacuate people. And their own shelters were a wreck during and after the storm - they didn't have enough places to send evacuees and recommended they flow into Alabama and Georgia.
