Evacuee voting: has this been discussed here? |
|
Most of the evacuees are black, poor and Democrats. Those in shelters will be there for a long time. Lists of evacuees' names have been gathered in most shelters, so there is a record of their residence.
They have lost everything else, but they are still American citizens. Shouldn't someone be conducting a voter registration drive? Where I live, people are eligible to register to vote when they have lived at an address for ninety days. Most evacuees will still be in shelters after ninety days have passed.
The 2006 elections are coming up soon. It is important. Even if it does not change red states to blue, it could make a difference in state and local elections.
The fact that people are there temporarily is a bullshit argument. My daughter goes to college in Iowa, so she is registered to vote there. She thought her vote could make more difference in Iowa than in blue Illinois. She is most certainly a temporary resident of Iowa. I don't think she will live there after she graduates. She still has a right to vote there.
Maybe I will write to some members of the Congressional Black Caucus. What do you think?

2. Without question. Though they should decide if Louisiana or |

their new Texas address, nearer to Babs, is where they want to call home.

3. Good point. I will include that in my letter. |
|
How will they even begin to vote absentee in Louisiana, if that is what they choose? Everything there is just destroyed. We need to start thinking about this now.
Our county Democratic Central Committee has a meeting tomorrow. I am going to bring it up there, and write some letters over the weekend. I think snail mail might get more attention.

4. Texas address? Try Minnesota! |
|
and any other cold northern state where the survivors will be over a thousands miles away. If the flood waters didn't kill them, the coming winter will most assuringly take its toll.

5. Look at where the refugees are being herded. |
|
They're being split up (even some families have been split up, until people started complaining) and shipped...to Blue areas!
Even the people in the Astrodome are in a Blue zone -- Houston is one of the few Blue areas in Texas.
Whether deliberate or not, the Bush Administration has used this natural disaster to destroy a huge Democratic base in Louisiana, thus guaranteeing that if large groups of people never return home (and they may not before the 2006 elections), that the state will never be Blue ever again. Blanco and Landrieux will (eventually) be out of jobs.
And by splitting them up all over the country, and dropping them into areas already dominated by Democrats, they've minimized their impact.

I am kidding...
Maybe they will all have to fill out absentee balots, or maybe we should get people down there to get them registered in Tom DeLays district, right outside of Hust.
