This is a really good point--there is a wide gap between C-SPAN's un-narrated coverage of events, whole speeches and press conferences, and on the other hand, the rest of the corporate media and its unending, oppressive "spin." I have heard so many great speeches from Democrats on C-SPAN--another great one by Represntative Louise Slaughter of New York on the floor of the House again today, on Republican arrogance and lack of cooperation, the disaster vs. Republican game-playing and spin; powerful--and then you contrast it with the pre-packaged patter of the corporate media, it is infuriating. They are actually KEEPING US from understanding things.
The whole corporate media approach to this, is: 1) Only Republicans are competent to run government, (they are the good people), and they should be the ones to do so; 2) Every time Democrats speak, remember that they are losers, don't belong in government because they do not have business backgrounds, and only "whine" and "play the blame game," which tarnishes everything you hear from them ahead of time; and 3) This is a tragedy so do not analyze, Bush is "doing the very best..." blah, "no one could've known..." blah, and so any attempts to get at the problems here, even the crimes, are presented as if, in all the world, only whiny Democrats are talking this way or asking these questions, and then only for fake, partisan reasons.
A society cannot remain a first-class, civilized, educated democracy, if there is no public square giving a free-flowing exchange of ideas; if there is only stupidity, then there can only be a kind of Medieval, government-less oppression, with the haughty rich, and the beasts of burden.
