Democratic Leaders to Boycott Republican Led Katrina Committee
Democratic Leaders to Boycott Republican Led Katrina Committee
September 8th, 2005

Democratic congressional leaders announced today at a press conference that they intended “to boycott a proposed Republican-led congressional committee to investigate the administration’s readiness and response to the storm.”

“I do not believe that the committee proposed by Speaker Hastert and Senator Frist is in the best interest of the American people,” said Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. Both he and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said they would not appoint members to the panel as currently contemplated.

The developments unfolded as the Labor Department reported that an estimated 10,000 workers who lost their jobs because of the storm filed for unemployment benefits last week, the first wave of what likely will be hundreds of thousands of such claims.

2. Good deal. And while they have them on the ropes, I'd like to see the DSM
inquiry come up again and watch the Republicans just TRY to squirm out of that one with a majority of the public no longer willing to accept being spun.

3. They should.
It's kind of hard to have a bi-partisan investigation when there are no Democrats.

I'm with the Dems on this 100% - we need an INDEPENDENT investigation.

along with wooly mammoths and other extinct creatures. I'm glad the Dems are taking a stand, though I wonder how much good it will do. A Republican-led inquiry into Republican fuck-ups? What an absolute joke!

7. Sen. Levin is right.
“There’s a pattern in this administration of denying information, particularly to requests of Democrats,” said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. If the committee is going to come from Congress, he said, “it must have a capability for both the majority and minortity to obtain documents and have subpoena power.”

Democrats allowing themselves to be bullied by the illegitimate majority.

A congressional majority bought by the Delay pack and redistricted by criminal intent.

A senate majority gained by strange election results on black box machines and the weird deaths by small plane of 2 democratic senators.

Good for them and it's about time!

I sent the DCCC 8 bucks I couldn't afford today because of this and DU'ers should send them more then they can afford too.

Nominated

All we need is 3 more votes for greatests

12. Bush is going to have to trot out Lee Hamilton...
...if he wants this thing covered up right.

Lee is the GOP janitor. He cleans up after them and keeps his mouth shut about what he saw.

And the good news for the Bushies is that a lot of people still think Hamilton is a Democrat, so he can supply that veneer of bipartisanship that Bush needs to get away with another one.
