Colin Powell, the former US secretary of state who told the United Nations that Saddam Hussein was concealing weapons of mass destruction, said yesterday that the assertion will always be a "painfulblot" on his record.

During a lengthy television interview with Barbara Walters, the doyen of the serious interview, Mr Powell tried to explain how the West had made mistakes in the run-up to war.

Asked whether the statement about WMD tarnished his reputation, the former general responded: "Of course it will. It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world and will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now."

The soldier-statesman made a dramatic and detailed presentation to the UN security council a month before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. It relied on the extensive use of intelligence material which later turned out to be inaccurate.

It was a Sunday morning back in 2002 when I was, as usual, listening to NPR as I had my breakfast. They aired an interview with you in which you told lie after lie. I knew they were lies, you knew they were lies, but unfortunately, a lot of Americans believed you.

After the "interview", I waited for someone to come on and rebut the prevarications you so glibly laid out. That was not to be.

I wrote a scathing letter to the NPR ombudsman, who I now think has the same level of integrity as Scott McClellan, who never answered me. On that day I decided, after 17 years of supporting our local affiliate, that NPR and hence our local would never get another dime from me.

Mr. Powell, few men in their entire lives ever even get the CHANCE to stand up and do what is right to great effect. You were given the chance, and you sold out. I respect the average petty criminal more than I respect you. I hope you live long enough to feel at a visceral level the damage you have done to America. Good day.
