Time Favors Gay Marriage Proponents
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/09/10/BAGIPELMGH1.DTL

<snip>

Social conservatives in California are feeling pretty cheerful now that the governor has said he will veto the same-sex marriage bill. And yes, across the country, 11 states, including California, have passed bans on same-sex marriage.

But here's some advice: Enjoy it now. It isn't going to last.

The right wing is missing a powerful, building undercurrent. Simply put, at this point, much of the younger generation has probably gone to school with openly gay peers. They also see them in the workplace and even in their neighborhoods. And they don't seem that scary.

Last spring, a friend of Eitan Bencuya, a third-year student at UC Berkeley and reporter for the Daily Californian student paper, told him that he was gay. Bencuya's reaction? Hum, that's interesting.

1. Yup.
At the risk of sounding cold, it's just a matter of waiting for the haters to die-off.

2. Opposition to same-sex marriage is already fading.
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 11:42 AM by terrya
There are polls out showing that the oppostion to same-sex marriage is dropping nationwide.

I was majorily pissed at Schwarzenegger (and still am) for vetoing the bill.

But you're right. It's the younger generation who will be the deciding factor. More and more teenagers, college students are coming out to their peers. And that will make all the difference. Heterosexuals will discover that their family members, friends are gay...and will change their own attitudes towards homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

Yep, Falwell and Robertson and their minions...enjoy it for now. Because it IS going to change. Legal same-sex marriage will be the norm in the United States of America. I suspect that even in their heart of hearts (if they actually have a heart), these hatemongers actually realize that.

3. I wish that were true
However, after MTV's groundbreaking Fight for Your Rights broadcast a few years ago they started a discussion board much like this one and I was absolutely stunned by the number and viciousness of anti-gay posts.

The haters are teaching their offspring. I think they are mostly terrified of what would happen if their kid turned out to be gay and met someone as narrow-minded and hateful as them (the parent).

As long as the media is so unbalanced people can live their whole lives thinking their way is the only way to think. I know I rarely read conservative papers and I can't watch or listen to conservative talk shows because they make me so angry. The other side must feel the same way, although I cannot understand why.

I was taught compassion - the real kind, not the kind claimed by gwb and his ilk. I was also taught to see both sides of the coin if possible. So many people don't seem to do that any more.

4. Of course it does....
The increasing acceptance of gays in our society will utilmately include
marriage. The efforts of gay-haters to turn back the hands of time to
when gays stayed nicely in the closet so the rest of us could pretend
they don't exist, is futile.
