Did you do anything special or what?

1. Woke up, ground some Starbuck Gazebo Blend, fresh baked
scones and the NY times on the deck with my wonderful wife...picked some tomatoes in my garden, walked our 3 dogs, watched the Sox/Yanks game, homemade soup, bread, nice wine for dinner, another walk of the dogs. Had a passing thought re 911 - said a prayer for those who lost their lives or loved ones, then a prayer that somehow Bush, Cheney and the gang would all be forced out and can get beyond our 5 year nightmare (that is a daily prayer!).

All in all, a nice peaceful day. And yes, kept an eye on the news on DU now and then.

10. You can put me down for "so sickened exploitation"! Ispent the day getting
some work done and spending it with my wife and three boy's. Glorious weather and we managed to play some outdoor games after the work was done. I cherish weekends with family. The dog even got a bath today, much to his chagrin.

Hello North Raleigh Liberal. How did you catch the Sox/yanks game? Do you have the nesn package? I had to settle for online gameday which is not nearly satisfying, especially when they lose in one run game. Damn. Wakefield did a good job but our incredible offense went missing today. Oh well it's a three game lead at least and hopefully they'll hold on.

12. I did the same thing - had my laptop running wireless on my deck
so "watching" was a figure of speech! I really thought that they put themselves in a good position to score in the 8th and 9th, but - oh well! At least they are getting their pitching straightened out late in the season, and the offense should be fine.

Yes, I try to keep this all in perspective. Our country is going to hell with the current misadministration, but life is good in terms of my job, hobbies, family, etc - so I do try to keep things in balanced perspective (DU is a great brain stimulant, and I found the NYT particularly stimulating today - our other paper, Raleigh News and Observer, is more like quickly read junk food!).

good night!

I switched-up my topics a bit, from DU to video games to radiology to Peak Oil.

It's been a lazy, rainy day here in Austin. Good relax-and-read weather.

3. I thought about it a little bit, but mostly had a normal day.
It's interesting how Katrina has put 9-11 into a different frame.

It's also interesting to think about how much devastation our country has had to endure since the beginning of B*'s first term. WOW! Two of the biggest disasters ever, plus a quagmirish war, all with the same president!

Coincidence? Er, I don't think so.

Remember Oklahoma City on Clinton's watch? That was bad, too, but there was a real investigation and someone was caught and punished for it. Oh, the old days...

Phew...

13. Went to a birthday party for my son-in-law.
He was particularly distressed four years ago that this disaster fell on his birthday. I think it bothered him psychologically in a way that was difficult for the rest of us to understand. I can only guess that most of us feel that our birthdays are sort of special and I think he was angry at the desecration of this date. And not at all in a selfish way. I think most Americans who were not personally touched by a family death or tragedy still lost a certain degree of innocence that morning.

21. I can understand the "...our birthdays are sort of special..." feeling,
My Birthday fell on TWO of the worst Presidential Elections in this countries history (November 7, 1972 and November 7, 2000).

I doubt I need to remind anyone here who was elected* on either of those terrible nights.

But hey, Jimmy Osmond has the same cross to bare.

16. I thought about it
and thought of the victims. I thought about how freaked I was that day when I turned on the TV and saw all the smoke over NYC. Both my kids lived there and I was pretty freaked until they checked in.

I thought about the Katrina victims and how poorly this administration handled it.

I went to a street fair and cheered the Code Pink women. It is my best friend's birthday. We had a pleasant day.

I'm out of fear. Nothing scares me anymore, not terrorists, not natural disasters. Maybe snakes. I'm still afraid of snakes.

and too upset.

It enrages me to realize that even in the best case scenario (meaning, giving Bush every single benifit of the doubt and putting a huge leap of faith behind him), our President is still a dangerously incompetent moron.

27. Still it's hard not
to relive some of the horror. I spent a good portion of the day shaking, even after I found out my kids were ok. I had to go to work because I am a high school counselor and the school wanted counselors on site to help kids deal with the whole thing.

Yeah, Bush is an incompetent fool. I won't use the word moron because I don't think he really is that dumb. He's just an intellectually lazy SOB who is pretty much disconnected from what is going on with 95% of the people in this country. It's not that he doesn't care - it's more that he has no connection to most ordinary people. He tries to look engaged, but it doesn't come off as sincere because it isn't.

Maybe people are finally starting to wake up to what a fraud he is. I hope so. People like him should not be running this country.

Trust me, he's a moron.

But, you are right.

He is intellectually lazy. Just lazy, overall. And it really makes me sick.

One thing that did come out of the hurricane, though: at last, Bush's general laziness, apathy, and utter disdain for doing his job finally got some full exposure.

How could anyone not notice what a lazy, uncaring SOB he is?

18. Other, I guess
I posted a memorial to two firefighters that I'd known when they were kids on my blog. I watched some of a documentary movie about it on HBO2. I thought the movie was worth watching even though it made Guiliani look good. Actually, Guiliani's demeanor made Bush look even worse. The movie made me angrier than ever at the way that Bushco has exploited this. I read some of the personal stories about it in the paper. Thought about it a lot, remembering the day. It's too local to us here. It'll never go away, never get submerged into the other things that have happened to this country as long as there are people who were alive at the time.

24. As on most Sunday mornings, I woke up at 7:30,
made coffee and breakfast, and headed off for choir rehearsal. However, I was late, due to a @#$$% road race that blocked off my usual route to church.

After the service, I hung around and talked to people for a while and then headed out to the home of my mother, who is preparing to move into an assisted-living apartment (voluntarily).

My brothers and sisters-in-law and I are helping her go through her stuff and decide what goes along and what is to be sold or given to us or other relatives.

Then I came home. Now I'm watching Mystery on PBS. :-)

Although 9/11 was a shock when it was happening, I wasn't personally affected, so I don't feel any particular need to commemorate it.

55. Not so much the racers, but the fact that there was no warning
that the only direct route out of my neighborhood would be blocked off. (My neighborhood is sandwiched between two lakes, so if the main route north is blocked off, that means a ten-minute detour.)

Usually they post warnings that the road is going to be blocked. Not this time.

I'm not uptight about coming in late to church, but choir rehearsal is another matter. Our rehearsals are pretty intense, and if I'm late, I may miss the only run-through that a certain part of the service is going to get.

37. They are claiming on the "news" that 15,000 people showed up, But...
...they did NOT allow any News Cameras (fairly sure about that) and (this is true) did not allow ANY last minute Walk-up registration for the "freedom walk." You had to be pre-registered by Friday at 5:00pm, and anyone who tried to join the "freedom walk" along the route, would be arrested. Not an easy task, because the route was lined with 4 ft. "Snow Fencing."

You also had to pre-registered for the "freedom concert" on the Lawn too. The only video I saw on the news was a VERY tight shot of Rummy speaking in front of a black background.

I saw a terrible traffic accident about to happen and did nothing to prevent it. I figured that the tragedy of this accident would allow my township to put a traffic surveillance camera in at the intersection in order to "keep all of us safe", when it will actually be used to monitor the people on the corner who may or may not be engaging in illegal activity. I should also mention that me and my buddies own the camera company and will profit greatly from it's installation.

49. Tried to explain 9/11 to my 5-year-old.
We heard that some firefighters would be reading stories at the local library, it seemed like a pleasant afternoon diversion so we went.

After they were done listening to stories, we returned to the car with some bookmarkers the firemen had handed out. These markers included photos of the WTC and Pentagon, pre-attack.

I asked my little one if she knew why flags are flown at half-mast. She wasn't sure, so I reminded her it was to remember people who've died.

I told her that many people died on this day four years ago. Many of them were firemen in New York City.

I told her that those two big buildings in the picture were no longer standing because some bad people had set fire to them.

Nothing too nightmare-inspiring, but I did think it was time for her to have some understanding of this attack.

Since I can't do the sadness thing anymore, I had a nice walk and enjoyed the blue sky-which I usually hate this day because it's so like any other day but really every day someone dies, every day is the worse day for someone somewhere so if TODAY isn't that day for you-you must enjoy it the best you can.

59. I worked on a paper about the psychosocial impacts of disasters
Pulled an all-nighter until 4 AM, actually, since I was facing a deadline!

And yes, I did put in stuff about 9/11 and New Orleans.
