Bush to drive through devastated New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - President Bush on Monday will get his first up-close look at the destruction in New Orleans, where the good news included the fact that floodwaters now cover just half the city.

During his third visit to the Gulf Coast since the storm hit, the president will survey the damage to the city by air and in military vehicles on the ground before heading to Gulfport, Miss., which was also pummeled when Katrina hit on Aug. 29.

The waters in New Orleans, which once covered 80 percent of the city, have pulled back far enough to allow for a scenic drive down Esplanade Avenue, past the handsome, columned two-story home where French painter Edgar Degas once lived to the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park.
