Sensenbrenner's constituents in the 5th CD call him out.
Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 09:11 AM by ClassWarrior
Reposted from the Wisconsin forum by request, and received via email...

A half-dozen constituents of Congressman F. James Sensenbrenner, in the 5th Congressional District from Milwaukee County, Waukesha County and Ozaukee County, visited Congressman Sensenbrenner's office at 120 Bishops Way, Room 154 in Brookfield, WI 64006-6294 to personally deliver a message to him.

With cameras from Fox 6 and WISN 12 rolling, we walked in to Congressman Sensenbrenner's office to tell him how appalled we were that he would choose this time to claim to be fiscally responsible. He didn't do it during the Bush tax cuts, and he didn't do it when he voted for Bush's Energy Bill with its over 6,000 cases of "pork" projects, but he did stand against providing immediate and significant help to hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast Survivors who've already suffered because of the Federal Government's incompetence.

This was our statement to him:

In the light of the poor Federal response in assisting the Gulf Coast Survivors, which has clearly delayed medical assistance and vitally needed food and water, causing additional unnecessary deaths, Congress stepped in to legislate assistance where Bush, Homeland Security and FEMA utterly failed.

The Katrina Relief Bill passed in the Senate 97-0, and in the House 410-11. You, Congressman Sensenbrenner were one of the 11 who voted against the bill.

You have been cited as claiming that the reason for your opposition was because there wasn't enough oversight of the money being spent. While that, on the surface, may be a concern, considering FEMA has been so incompetent in its handling of this National Emergency so far, and is being given the responsibility for the distribution of these funds, isn't it the responsibility of Congress to oversee the distribution of these funds? Why is it that you would block this aid to the survivors, and turn your back on them at this critical time when this funding is so desperately needed? This is unconscionable.

We are constituents of the 5th Congressional District, which you are supposed to represent, and we are appalled and ashamed that you would vote in our name, to hold back such critical funding to Americans, who are survivors of a government failure, in their time of need, when hundreds are dying and many more may very well end up with chronic diseases or death because of the widespread exposure to biological toxins on American soil. This is a National Disgrace of a Federal Responsibility, and Americans shouldn't have to hold out a tin-cup and beg to Congressional Representatives that are supposed to represent them.

While the cameras taped the exchange, neither Channel 6 (FOX), nor WISN Channel 12 ran the footage during their 6:00 evening news.

If you believe that Congressman Sensenbrenner should be more representative of his constituents in making sure that PEOPLE come ahead of "Pork" projects, please take this around to anyone in your community and get them to sign it and send it on to Congressman Sensenbrenner. Please send us a copy so that we can keep track of who you are, where you are and how many of you don't care for Sensenbrenner's priorities.

Note from CW: If you want to help my neighbors defeat Sensenbrenner, please help his 2006 opponent, Progressive Bryan Kennedy - http://www.bk2006.org

and these people rightly responded. A Cindy Sheehan you could call brave. But these people are excellent citizens and spot on!

3. The fact that they ran
NO footage shows how well the protestors did. they couldn't mollify, edit or spin anything better than simply ignoring the event and writing off the taping.

I would like to think that the reporters were incensed at having this work shelved, but maybe not. Trying to make a news story out of how a news story is covered is a dizzying proposition with nowhere to go if you can't trust the media in the first place.

...they would have ignored it if it weren't for these protesters.

16. You know, I hate to say it, but I might have voted against that bill too
The money should not have been given to FEMA--it should have been directed to the Louisiana governor's fund. At least half of it. Giving it to FEMA is like buying a new Mercedes for the kid who got drunk and smashed your current Mercedes into a tree.

17. The point is that F. Jimmy DIDN'T call for oversight on Iraq contracts...
...that went without review to Halliburton, for instance. But suddenly when it comes to helping needy American citizens, he's had an epiphany?

But, I can see myself voting against giving FEMA so much as a lollipop without intense and unending scrutiny. And 50% should have gone through the governor's office.

37. Our ever un predictable congressman Butch Otter
voted against the appropriation also and he is really catching hell for it.
He argues likewise that we should be sure the money is well spent.
It is at times like these that the issue is too visceral. I am as upset about what
happened as anyone with a soul should be and we as a family are doing what we can
to help but sometimes I just wonder if these bills are well thought out despite
the public clamor to do something now. On the other hand, considering the obscene
amount of money we have spent on killing innocents around the world, this seems
like a poor time to pause and consider fiscal details.

44. Truly. If he's so concerned about financial accountability, why start
now? So much more has been squandered and stolen in Iraq. If we could just get some of THAT wasted money back, we'd have plenty to start the rebuilding of New Orleans.

and since he's the only one with name recognition, he's almost automatically in.

One of my local Dem officers though said there was a rumor that he might retire, so then Kennedy will have a fighting chance.

36. Isn't that the bill they voted on before they had a copy of it to read?
If it is the same one I read about here a few days ago, it would have been the emergency budget for NO.
The White House pushed that out to the Republicans to call a vote without giving the Dems a copy of what it said. I don't know if the Republicans got a copy before the vote or not.
Who knows what the Bushies could have stuck in that bill. I think I would have wanted to read it before putting my name to it.
