After the 2004 U.S. Presidential election there were allegations of massive fraud, including but not limited to forging vote totals, miscounting votes for Kerry as votes for Bush <1>, widespread voter intimidation and depriving neighborhoods likely to vote for Kerry of voting machines.

Over 40,000 alleged incidents were reported in the 2004 election, ranging from minor errors to direct voter intimidation, mishandled absentee and provisional ballots, malfunctioning or inaccurate machines and/or apparent hacking and vote tampering. (Source <2>).

The mere fact that it was not possible for everyone to vote who wanted to is something us Australians can scarcely understand. Here there are several voting places set up in every suburb, each with a dozen or more voting cubicles. You might have to wait 5 minutes, though I've never had to, but there is never a situation of long queues outside. Nobody is discouraged from voting, and there is no distinguishing between people voting for different parties. You are offered a "how to vote" card for each party standing, and it is considered polite to accept them all, you walk into the cubicle, copy from your party's how to vote, and put your voting slip in a box on your way out, having your name ticked of on the register of people voting in that area. - fast and simple

All votes are counted with representatives of both parties watching.

Of course our right-wing Bush-loving government would do it his way if they could get away with it, but having compulsary voting makes that difficult.

8. I should hope that in the near future I will be able to work

to remedy our system so that it functions well; I would like a transparent process, that is verifiable and can be audited. It would be nice if we didn't have to wait for hours, and hours, and hours to vote in America. Actually, I have never had to wait as long as some of my fellow patriots did in November 2004. We DID make history though. I find that I am quite ashamed of our "election" system, and this wretched Government - but hey, things are looking up today. Thanks for your comments.
