Bush's vow: To rebuild better

By Judy Keen, USA TODAY Thu Sep 15, 8:56 AM ET

http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20050915/ts_usatoday/bushsvowtorebuildbetter

President Bush will tell the nation Thursday night that he's committed to rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, while eliminating the poverty and joblessness that were exposed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. (Related audio: Speech designed to improve sagging poll numbers)

Dan Bartlett, Bush's counselor, said the president will reflect on "the horrific suffering" in the region and "outline the beginnings of a vision of the future."

In a prime-time speech from New Orleans, Bush also will pledge more federal help providing housing, health care and education to evacuees. "We want to see a region that is better and stronger than before," said Bush spokesman Scott McClellan.

Two Bush advisers with direct knowledge of the speech said the president is considering the appointment of a high-profile "czar" to oversee recovery efforts. But one said the White House is checking whether that would be allowed under federal law. The aides insisted on anonymity to avoid pre-empting Bush's remarks at 9:02 p.m. ET. The speech is expected to be about 30 minutes long and will be aired by the major networks.

The speech is part of a White House plan to show the president's concern and commitment to the devastated region after criticism about initial slow responses by Bush and federal agencies.

2. Of course,
by "eliminating" he means "destroying" and by "the poverty and joblessness" he means "America." Durn tootin'! He's a straight shooter. Love to have a beer with him. :sarcasm: :puke:

8. Stranger things have happened...

There’s colors on the street
Red, white and blue
People shufflin’ their feet
People sleepin’ in their shoes
But there’s a warnin’ sign on the road ahead
There’s a lot of people sayin’ we’d be better off dead
Don’t feel like satan, but I am to them
So I try to forget it, any way I can.

Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away, and she’s gone to get a hit
She hates her life, and what she’s done to it
There’s one more kid that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.

Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

We got a thousand points of light
For the homeless man
We got a kinder, gentler,
Machine gun hand

We got department stores and toilet paper
Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer
Got a man of the people, says keep hope alive
Got fuel to burn, got roads to drive.

Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world,
Keep on rockin’ in the free world.

6. Poverty and joblessness can't be eliminated from capitalism
If you read the Wall Street Journal and other periodicals regularly, the people who work for the capital-owners don't really try to hide the fact that they sometimes are trying to increase unemployment, so as to drive wages down, so as to increase profits. Profit is the ultimate motive of capitalism, not jobs, not wages. In fact, according to the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average inflation-adjusted hourly wage in the US is below what it was 30 years ago. The average American worker made more per hour thirty years ago, adjusted for inflation, then he (or she) does now.

7. right, and 30 years ago the ruling classes decided to dump the...
American Worker in favor of cheap labor. So poverty and low wages are what U.S. economic policy is all about.

10. Eliminating from New Orleans and putting there somewhere else
Remember what some Republicans said after Katrina about reconstructing NO without public housing.
