15. for non-Jewish DUers: conservative Jews aren't necessarily conservativ
Just to be clear, being a "conservative Jew" doesn't mean that you are politically conservative. There are three main divisions in American Judaism: the Reform movement, the Conservative movement, and the Orthodox. The Orthodox are the strictest of the three when it comes to following religious doctrine. The "Conservative" movement is less dogmatic -- for example, the Conservative movement recognizes female rabbis (which differentiates them from the Orthodox). The Reform movement are the least observant -- shorter services, more English than Hebrew, not keeping Kosher). Within all three movements there are gradations: I belong to a Conservative synagogue (with a female rabbi), I maintain some of the rules of keeping Kosher, but not all, etc.
But politically, there are plenty of very liberal Orthodox and Conservative Jews and plenty of conservative Reform Jews.

6. Tradition
Normally any male, Jew or not, is to wear a yarmulke in a synagogue. What personally creeps me out is how close he is to the Torah.

7. kipa, or not kipa
In the past, Reform congregations relaxed their requirements for wearing a Kipa (yarmulke)> The Rabbi at the Reform congregation I used to belong to still does not wear one. Now however, they are moving back to being more observant in that regard. The Conservative Shuls never changed the requirement.

25. Never mind. I found a link.
http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1298/bush1.asp

"...Bush said he was visiting his parents in the White House and, having at that time recently recommitted to religion, began to discuss “who goes to heaven” with his mother, Barbara. Bush pointed to a passage in the Christian Bible which said that “only Christians had a place in heaven...

"...The issue once again appeared on the radar screen when Bush announced at the November Republican Governors Association meeting that he would be making a National Jewish Coalition-sponsored trip to Israel. When asked by the same Texas reporter who intially relayed his view on heaven what he was going to say to Israeli Jews, Bush, obviously joking, said the first thing he would tell them is that they were all 'going to hell.'..."

Wow. That's something.

17. Height of Hypocrisy
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 04:09 PM by xkenx
This is just a disgusting photo op for someone whose base supposedly supports Israel, when, in fact, their only interest in Israel is to provide an intact place for Jesus' return, at which time the Jews will either convert or die! Since they won't die voluntarily, that means genocide. Why that cockroach is even allowed into a Temple is a mystery to me.

19. if I understand the symbolism of wearing a yarmulke
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 04:29 PM by npincus
it is an act of humility and obeisence in relation to a greater G-d above you. It's a reminder of the relative postion between G-d and man; you (man) are below, and G-d is above. So, inother words G-d is not Man, and Man is not G-d.

SO, it is so IRONIC that a man who thinks he is acting on behalf of G-d (G-d's Mini-Me) is wearing a yarmulke. He is possibly the LAST MAN ON EARTH who should be wearing one.

Anyway, i am a non-observant Jew, I may not be completely right about the above, but that's what I have been told.

20. The kipa looks like the ones in the bin for non members
Most synagogues have cheap kipas in a bin so that non Jews or people who don't bring a kipa have one to wear. You'd think they'd get him a decent looking one.
