Was Katrina just what this country needed? |
|
Crazy idea, I know...and so many people have suffered...
But if this exposes:
- the face of poverty and racism in this country - the dysfuncionality of our government and generates reforms that support and protect the most vulnerable among us
And if it gets this fucked up administration to take care of the people (instead of the corporations) even if only to keep their poll numbers up...
MSM is waking up and reporting on what is really happening (Anderson Cooper and Brian Williams)...
So many positive posts re: Bush's speech tonight...if this is what it took, is it a blessing in disguise?
I wish in no way to minimize the suffering, but could this be the great awakening?

1. =Part= of the great awakening. We have to depend upon ourselves |
|
and each other, not "leaders".

3. It may be a small silver lining but Bush's numbers were tanking... |
|
before Katrina and this only exacerbated a raw wound in the country. It may well speed up his demise but he was on the decline before this, he's just falling faster is all. If Katrina had hit and they responded appropriately, no one would have noticed, no matter how much Rove played it up. Katrina was a tragedy that exposed the true American tragedy, this is true. But the tide had turned on Bush and the Repubs a few months ago with the truth about Rove and the CIA leak.

4. This fucked up admin will NEVER "take care of the people" |
|
are you dreaming?
The dysfunctionality of government can only be solved by REMOVING the current administration.
If that happens, well, I guess.....you might be able to say that the people of New Orleans who suffered suffered for a "noble cause" ....sorta....

10. I agree. Look at what they have done "rebuilding" Iraq. |
|
They will take this money and pay big bucks to Halliburton for some half-ass job and call it rebuilding. The poor will be overlooked as soon as the press and those of us on blogs forget. They never do anything that doesn't make them rich. As I understand it NY is still waiting for much of the promises of 9/11. Talk is cheap.

6. I agree, but it seems like the tide is turning...we have the first |
|
"mea culpa", and a pledge (not to be confused with a plan) to rebuild NO...
Cannot believe that this it what had to have happened for the tide to "maybe" turn, but it what else could have overcome the arrogance of this administration?

7. Yes in the way a drunk has to totally reach bottom before he can |
|
truly rehabilitate himself.
But the jury's still out on this one.
I don't know how much lower we can go - I'm afraid to ask.

9. searching for a silver lining in 'unpreparedness" that goes back |
|
decades...
Bad local politics, and no influence or interest on a federal level...cannot change what is past, but could the spotlight make for a better future?

11. I dont like that kind of thinking- there could be MORE fuck-ups & deaths. |
|
Or I should say there WILL be- at least overseas.
I know what you are saying, but be careful what you pray for.
