Press Congress to renew Violence Against Women Act

-snip-

And four are murdered. That's more than the average number of U.S. troops killed daily in Iraq.

The fate of these women and their families could become even worse if Congress does not act quickly to renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which is set to expire at the end of September.

-snip-

Since the passage of VAWA in 1994, rates of domestic violence incidents have dropped by almost 50 percent, and incidents of rape are down by 60 percent.

We must not lose this momentum.

so it used to be 1400 a day................

american men are such swell guys

and they appointed an animal Vet. to oversee women's health

I call that a slap in the face, a punch in the gut, a kick to the ribs, a bloody rape by the criminal bushgang.

1. Domestic violence is (or was) my forte'
and I have seen the funds dribble down to being a mere small raindrop in the bucket. It will eventually be turned over to the churchies, who encourage the wives to stay with their husbands and "do better".

2. That thought scares the hell out of me
And is one reason why I am totally against these faith-based initiatives. In almost every case, the funding of government agencies providing grants to professionals has been sliced, and that money moved to FBOs. After all, the Texas program that the national program was modeled upon was infamous for giving grants to groups that thought you could pray away addiction, beat troubled children into submission, and force homeless women to attend proselytyzation sessions before receiving food. It's not such a stretch to see church groups with no professional counselors and a belief that women should submit to their husbands in all things (i.e., spousal rape does not exist) to get money for dealing with domestic violence victims.

4. with no professional counselors
See, that's the deal. I am considered a "proffessional counselor" but these places haven't the funds to hire such. Not anymore. I absolutely thought that I would always work, with my DV background and studies. Not so. At age 46, I find that my "position" no longer exists. I haven't worked in 5 years.

Evidently, we will all end up at wal-mart.

3. Some agencies have to beg for grants from corporations.
Not good.
