Poll: Fifty percent would vote in Democrat for Congress
A post-Katrina poll published in last Monday's newstand edition of Newsweek (PRNewswire link) contains heartening news for Democrats, RAW STORY has discovered. Just fourteen months before the Congressional elections, Democrats have opened up a 12 point lead over their GOP rivals.

The Republicans currently maintain a 232-to-202 advantage over the Republicans. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is the only Independent Congressman, and he usually sides with the Democrats.

A few days ago The Washington Times reported that Independent election tracker Stuart Rothenberg, in his political newsletter, wrote that "ith President George W. Bush's job ratings battered by the war in Iraq, high gas prices and public dissatisfaction with the state of the economy, 2006 looks to be a golden opportunity for House Democrats."

Democrats could win back control of the House that they lost in 1994 with a net gain of 15 seats.

Suppose the elections for U.S. Congress were being held today. Would you vote for the Republican Party's candidate or the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress in your district?

IF OTHER/UNDECIDED, RESPONDENTS WERE ASKED: As of today, do you lean more toward... the Republican or the Democrat?

BASED ON REGISTERED VOTERS

Rep/Lean Rep: 38

Dem/Lean Dem: 50

Undecided/Other: 12

2. It seems encouraging and the Democrats have got to take hold of...
this momentum and run with it. There is still much time between now and November 2006 and we must keep working so this momentum doesn't change.

3. How? --- In the last 24 hours,

We have had major Democrats like Donna Brazile and Bill Clinton defending and praising the Bushies to the world on our behalf.

How is that going to convince people to vote for THE DEMOCRATS -- in 2006, 2008, or EVER? We have most of Congressional Democarts either sitting on their hands or voting with the Repubs (noteable exceptions largely from the Congressional Black Congress).

Our Senate is the home of some of the weakest-ass, timid, fraidy-cat Democrats on the planet, and most are funded to the teeth by corporate interests.

How, EXACTLY, do we take advantage of any momentum with this shit continuing?

Does anyone here have an actual, concrete plan THAT WILL ACTUALLY WORK, to get this Party back on-track, focused and able to win an election again? --- Even given the fact of what is stated above?

Please post your plan here, because I feel we are at the edge of the abyss, personally.

TC

4. The proof is in the numbers
Finally it's not just Bush's numbers going down, but the Dems' numbers are rising! It's proven that negative politics hurts both parties involved. Bush is hurting himself enough. Dems need to rise above negative politics and offer solutions and a positive alternative to Repubs. They're doing that, and it's working.

I think you and others on DU want to see Dems pick up torches and pitchforks and go lynch Bush. Wrong thing to do. That's just the desire for instant gratification. We need to be looking at more realistic long-range plans.

5. With the polls showing a 12 point lead for the Democrats....
due to the response to Katrina, high gas prices and the war in Iraq the Democrats must drive these points home, over and over and over. There is more to the Democratic party than Bill Clinton and Donna Brazile.

6. A lot of voters like "balance"
When they feel one party has too much of a majority/power, they will vote for the other party.

I think the number of Americans who want the Republicans to maintain their current level of power or increase it is a definite minority.
