"Two Democrats who might seek the White House in 2008 blast Bush"
Kerry, Edwards blast Bush over Katrina

Monday, September 19, 2005; Posted: 4:18 p.m. EDT (20:18 GMT)

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/19/katrina.democrats.ap/index.html

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two Democrats who might seek the White House again in 2008 criticized President Bush for his response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, assailing the suspension of wage laws while urging a concerted effort to aid the poor.

Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and former Sen. John Edwards spoke separately Monday on the government's handling of the catastrophe and on the broader issue of poverty in the United States.

In a blistering critique, Kerry said former FEMA Director Michael Brown was to Hurricane Katrina "what Paul Bremer is to peace in Iraq; what George Tenet is to slam dunk intelligence ... what George Bush is to 'Mission Accomplished' and 'Wanted Dead or Alive.' ... The bottom line is simple: The 'we'll do whatever it takes' administration doesn't have what it takes to get the job done." In prepared remarks to be delivered at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee said the government's response to the disaster revealed a "broader pattern of incompetence and negligence" in the Bush administration.

Edwards, the 2004 vice presidential candidate, said the hurricane was a sober reminder that widespread poverty exists throughout the nation. He said it will persist if the poor are concentrated in specific neighborhoods far from jobs.

19. Why are the playing up a rivalry that may not even exist?
Why isn't it "Senators criticize Bush? or even Democtratic Senators criticize Bush?

I find the hint of division in the party in the headline very odd.

5. I don't care flame away I PROUDLY supported and voted for a Kerry-Edwards
ticket.

I would PROUDLY do so again even though my current first pick for pres is Clark.

Any combination of Clark, Kerry, or Edwards would be a ticket I'd support.

(But as of post election 2000 I became Anybody But a Republican when I saw what the Republican Party was truly becoming after it allowed McCain to be destroyed)

9. I also proudly supported, voted, and contributed to Kerry-Edwards...
...and at the time I contributed I was "unemployed / self-employed" (meaning my business was making NO money and I had NO clients.

I gave a pretty substantial chunk of change for someone in my position.

The only "condition" I would put on a Kerry-Edwards, Kerry-(to be determined), Edwards-(to be determined) ticket is I WANT TO SEE ANGER.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

The people on DU who replied to questions, concerns, whatever regarding Kerry's campaign with "SHUT THE FUCK UP...he KNOWS what he's doing"...

I'd like those people to go fuck themselves.

Other than that, I'm open to anything that will get the Republicans out of the White House for four years (and beyond)...

:patriot:

10. me too
it's not like they lost or anything...Mark Warner is also an interesting candidate in my eyes right now too-pretty much anybody but a republican and that,I find is a sad state of this (once great) union. For a guy who USED to vote for the person he thought was best for the job, regardless of party affiliation,it's become just another thing the Bush administration has fucked up IMO

7. Spinning their words as nothing more than politics
so that folks will be less inclined to take what they say on it's face. Who cares what Kerry or Edwards are saying. They're just running in 2008. Bah.

Can't you just see it... "Senator Obama, who might be running for president in 2012, said today..."

Bastard CNN.

11. Kerry had his chance.
He blew it. He conceded the day after the election and disappeared for several months. His views on Iraq do not sit well with me either.

Step aside Kerry, give someone else a chance.

23. Thank you for posting this.
Kerry has continued to work for us since Nov. 2, 2004. I had not seen this timeline before, but this is proof to those who say he disappeared and has done nothing. It is obvious he has put in more productive work days than our so-called president!

27. That is your opinion. I remember more than too many posts and
threads here on DU wondering where Karry was. Why, the day after the election, before the votes were even fully counted he rolled and disappeared without a whimper for about 3 months.
Also, unless I missed it, no one here is defending Kerry's stance on the Iraq war. I seem to remember a point of contention on DU with him agreeing with bu$h on this subject.

28. It is not my "Opinion"- it is a list of things Kerry has done since 11/04
and if you believe that Kerry and Bush's position are "the same" on the war in Iraq, you need to do a little research. Just because a paid Karl Rove disruptor posts something on DU doesn't mean you have to beleive it.

14. He conceded the day afterwards
which was the second SLOWEST concession in at least 50 years. Gore was behind 536 votes, Kerry over 100,000. He did not disappear for months - he was back in the Senate within 2 weeks (not sure of date). Quite visible on CSPAN. He was emailing people within a month and put a video msg on his web site. Maybe you were gone for several months.

16. Where are the Democrats... shut up Kerry... where are the Democrats
... shut up Kerry... Where are the Democrats.... shut up Kerry... ad nauseum.

Sorry. You go to war with the warrior you've got, not the warrior you may need or want.

And nobody's talking about 2008 except CNN.

I could mix/match the four of them just about any which way you want and be happy...

Kerry/Edwards
Kerry/Clark
Clark/Edwards
Gore/Edwards (ok, I admit it.. this is my real favorite)

17. I could be happy with any one of those
but I wouldn't mind if my sweet babboo had a place in one of their cabinets if he wasn't running for the top two spots. A nice Attorney General spot perhaps? Sec. of State? Vice-versa for any of the rest, cabinet-wise.

18. Edwards seems to "get it"......Kerry? er, um
The issues raised by Katrina go far beyond competance. They extend to the fundamental reasons that so many peope have it so bad in this nation.

Edwards seems to "get it," by focusing on the Big Picture of poverty, and the need to address it as a society.

Kerry? It sounds kinda like his criticism of the Iraq War, attacking the execution without questioning the fundamental validity of the war itself.

29. What Part doesn't Kerry get?
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 09:04 AM by emulatorloo
<snip>

Katrina stripped away any image of competence and exposed to all the true heart and nature of this administration. The truth is that for four and a half years, real life choices have been replaced by ideological agenda, substance replaced by spin, governance second place always to politics.

<snip>

And the rush now to camouflage their misjudgments and inaction with money doesn’t mean they are suddenly listening. It's still politics as usual. The plan they’re designing for the Gulf Coast turns the region into a vast laboratory for right wing ideological experiments. They’re already talking about private school vouchers, abandonment of environmental regulations, abolition of wage standards, subsidies for big industries - and believe it or not yet another big round of tax cuts for the wealthiest among us!

The administration is recycling all their failed policies and shipping them to Louisiana. After four years of ideological excess, these Washington Republicans have a bad hangover -- and they can't think of anything to offer the Gulf Coast but the hair of the dog that bit them.

And amazingly -- or perhaps not given who we’re dealing with -- this massive reconstruction project will be overseen not by a team of experienced city planners or developers, but according to the New York Times, by the Chief of Politics in the White House and Republican Party, none other than Karl Rove -- barring of course that he is indicted for "outing" an undercover CIA intelligence officer.

Katrina is a symbol of all this administration does and doesn't do. Michael Brown -- or Brownie as the President so famously thanked him for doing a heck of a job - Brownie is to Katrina what Paul Bremer is to peace in Iraq; what George Tenet is to slam dunk intelligence; what Paul Wolfowitz is to parades paved with flowers in Baghdad; what Dick Cheney is to visionary energy policy; what Donald Rumsfeld is to basic war planning; what Tom Delay is to ethics; and what George Bush is to “Mission Accomplished” and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The bottom line is simple: The "we'll do whatever it takes" administration doesn't have what it takes to get the job done.

have Bachelor's degrees, let alone private elitist boarding HS and Ivy league educations. WHY does he continue to load up his message with excessive rhetoric?

Really, how many people can relate to: "a vast laboratory of right wing idealogical experiments?" or "real life choices have been replaced by ideological agenda, substance replaced by spin, governance second place always to politics."

Dean said it better and so did Edwards. Straight to the point, in a way that the majority of Americans can relate to. My God, most people are left wondering, WTF did Kerry say or where does he really stand? It's no wonder the flip flopper label stuck.

20. 1st choice:
Kerry, and proud of it.

2nd: Clark

3rd: Gore

Gimme any of these, even Edwards, and I'll be happy. I just don't want Hillary.

31. Edwards and his "two Americas" is positioned strongly imo.
Edwards was talking about the "two Americas" in the 2004 primaries. Now Katrina has exposed how correct he was. I believe this may make him the candidate to beat in 2008.

35. Both speeches compliment each other. Kerry's is certainly more
powerful, and Edward's draws comparisons of inequality of response and poverty.
I just want to know why it was necessary for the media to play up the 2008 angle. Why can't they be angry and concerned without being tagged as 2008 would be candidates? Also, why mention both men in the same article.Couldn't they spare the ink for two separate pieces? I hate these media tricks and manipulations.
