Frist sold shares in family's hospital corporation shortly before its value fell

By JONATHAN M. KATZ
ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 — Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a potential presidential candidate in 2008, sold all his stock in his family's hospital corporation about two weeks before it issued a disappointing earnings report and the price fell nearly 15 percent.

<<snip>>

Frist held an undisclosed amount of stock in Hospital Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., the nation's largest for-profit hospital chain. On June 13, he instructed the trustee managing the assets to sell his HCA shares and those of his wife and children, said Amy Call, a spokeswoman for Frist.

<<snip>>
The value of Frist's stock at the time of the sale was not disclosed. Earlier this year, he reported holding blind trusts valued at $7 million to $35 million.

<<snip>>

Frist, a surgeon first elected to the Senate in 1994, had been criticized for maintaining the holdings while dealing with legislation affecting the medical industry and managed care. Call said the Senate Ethics Committee has found nothing wrong with Frist's holdings in the company in a blind trust.

HCA — formerly known as Columbia HCA Healthcare Corp. — has been a top contributor to the senator's campaigns, donating $83,450 since 1989, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

3. This sounds like information leaked by Rove...
Seriously. Frist is being punished for going against the grain. He spoke out against Junior and he also went the wrong way on stem-cell research.

He's being punished. This is retaliation.

I bet you anything--that Rove and Company have dirt like this on every single Senator and Representative. I'm sure they're all routinely threatened too. Bastards!

I'm dead serious about this. This information has been out there for a long time. Why is it emerging now?

It's coming out now, because someone ordered that it come out now.

5. Sometimes, intimidation makes people mad.
I'm just saying. If Fitzgerald indicts, who will cry? Besides George?

Frist has been wonderfully full of himself. Seems to me he might possess ways of getting even, too.

Wouldn't bother me a bit if they all took each other out. God knows, these criminals have a lot to hide.

8. So it's the result of paybacks. And yes, the story's been out there for
a while. But how many people know it? Do they know what kind of a sleezy scam artist the good doctor really is? Do they know how he and his family drove up the costs of medical care in the state that he represents in the Senate? Some rep. Make sure medical care is unaffordable and then run in an election to represent the same people in the United States Senate. Do you know what a duplicitous bastard this guy really is? Think about it. He's screwing the people that he's supposed to be representing. Hell is too good for him and these other republican assholes.

Good grief. I never thought I would ever ever ever swear in a public internet forum. But then came the 2000 election and I've haven't been sane since.

10. I hear you about the swearing...
I tell you...I love to fucking swear on this forum.

HA!

I never swear in real life. If my two preschool-aged kids say the word "stupid" we sit down and have a talk about nice words and bad words.

I come here to vent. Right now, I'm clinging to the cathartic release of DU. I'm optimistic and I have hope. However, I've never been so angry, sad or upset about BushCo. The hurricane, the people who died because help didn't arrive, gas prices, Iraq, Bush not seeing Cindy, global warming, our massive deficit, etc. I also worry about who will be next...Iran? Syria? VZ?

I fucking can't take this shit any more!

Swearing can be healthy and a good release. You're sane! It's healthy to be pissed off and sad because these evil bastard thug assholios are in power.

The hell with em!

Ok, back to being a PTA mom, now....

13. Good God - sounds nothing like Martha Stewart.
She was not on the board of Imclone. She didn't start Imclone. She didn't vote on legislation affecting Imclone. She owned a minor portion of the Imclone shares. She was not charged with or guilty of insider trading.

She acted on a stock tip. That was/is not illegal. Her only, crime, I repeat, only crime was that she lied to Federal officers. Had she told them the truth when first approached that would have been the end of it.

Her case is still on appeal even though she has already served the time. A member of the jury lied to get on the jury (may have been the foreman) and a member of the FBI team lied on the stand and later admitted it.

What I learned from the Martha Stewart thing was that you can lie to state, city, and county officals but not federal officials. The other thing I learned is if you are a highly successful female you are going to get screwed by the legal system and the media. Before she was charged with this crap I couldn't stand her, now I can't stand stupid people who don't get what the deal is.

15. Thanks for the clarification. I did take it wrong.
Truth is, probably 90 - 95% of Americans think she committed, was charged with and found guilty of insider trading. And, I have seen other posts here at DU from otherwise informed people that repeat the media spin. The blame rests at the feet of the men who report the news on network and cable and constantly leave the casual listeners with the impression that she was guilty of insider trading.

The reason it makes me so angry is that it is so obviously sexist and otherwise good people don't stop and think about what drivel they are repeating.

Geez - I am still mad but, not at you.

i was behind martha all the way and it made me angry also. i just wanted to show the difference between the two and how frist will get away with it. again, sorry for the misunderstanding.:hi:

16. Sounds like our esteemed governor of Indiana too...
Do all these corrupt Repubs attend a special seminar to learn how to bilk people? In Mitch's case, he and his fellow directors just happened to dump millions of dollars in stock shortly before the utility company was sold. What a guy. What a Republican.

May 7, 2003

"Well, well, well, Mitch Daniels may be the first Bush administration official to resign over allegations of insider trading. Yes, Karl Rove floated the story that Daniels is leaving to run for governor of Indiana, and that may be true in the end. After all, alleged financial malfeasance is something that makes you highly qualified to run for public office as a Bush Republican.

<snip>

"...State regulators are issuing subpoenas to a "who's who" of the Indianapolis business community over the sale of shares in IPALCO Enterprises about the time the utility company was sold in 2001.

The Indiana Securities Division on Friday sent the requests for information to about 30 former IPALCO officers and directors, The Indianapolis Star has learned.

They include former IPALCO director Mitch Daniels, a former Eli Lilly and Co. executive who is now President Bush's budget director. Daniels, who sold about $1.45 million in IPALCO stock in January 2001, on Tuesday announced he is resigning the federal post, leading to speculation he will run for governor here..."
