Why no regular news updates on Rita?
I would think that updates from leading weather forecasting and analysis sources should be updated in the 'late breaking news' every two or three hours at most

8. Why isn't everyone loaded on school buses???
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 06:40 AM by OneTwentyoNine
That was the Freeper rally cry for the dead in NO to explain away their deaths and take the heat off of Bush.

From the shots I've seen of Houston I've yet to see bus after bus evacuating the city, all I see is a big ass traffic jam and the inbound lanes to Houston completly EMPTY.

9. You weren't paying attention.
If you don't see things when you're looking elsewhere, don't assume they didn't happen.

Last night at 5:30 I passed a long line of empty school buses returning to Houston from an evacuation run.

They've been evacuating people from Galveston County for a couple of days. They've gone door-to-door in Galveston proper. And visited all the nursing and care-centers in the evacuation area on the entire coast. They've closed some hospitals, and air evacked everybody in them. They've used the mass transit and school buses for evacuating those without their own transportion from the mandatory evacuation areas of Harris County (lic. Houston and some smaller towns adjacent to it).

There's no need to evacuate most of Houston. The wind will produce some flying debris, and people should take shelter from the debris. There'll be heavy flooding in a few areas outside the mandatory evacuation areas, some flooding in more areas, and no or trivial flooding in many areas. NOLA was less affected by Katrina's rain and wind than by failing levees.

11. The Further Adventures of Kent Slate and Shelby Shapely, Ace Reporters
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 10:04 AM by KansDem
In their office away from their office, our Ace Reporters Kent and Shelby are pondering their next assignment

Shelby: “Kent, the boss wants us to cover Rita…”
Kent: “What! Again? My loafers haven’t dried out since Katrina!”
Shelby: “I know how you feel. Do you remember what that storm did to my hair?”
Kent: “Say, why can’t we just feed them old clips from Katrina and overdub the reporting. We would only have to change “Katrina” to “Rita!”
Shelby: “I don’t know, Kent. Wouldn’t the viewers catch on?”
Kent: “Are you kidding? Don’t you remember what CNN did with that photo of a nuclear plant? Said first it was in North Korea, then a few days later, in Iran. Sure scared the hell out of America. And they only used one photo!”
Shelby: “Well, it still sounds risky.”
Kent: “Maybe, but still a lot better than actually doing our jobs!”
Shelby: “You’ve got a point there, Kent! Besides, we are dealing with the “American public.”
Kent: “Damn straight, Shelby! I got a few left-over photos of Katrina. Go down to my cabin and grab them while I fire up the laptop and do the “replace Katrina with Rita” command on our articles from two weeks ago.
Shelby: “OK, Kent! Anything else?”
Kent: “Yeah, and grab me another Pina Colada!”
