Legend - Death curse threatens U.S. presidents elected in years
evenly divisible by twenty.

<snip>

Those who look to make sense of eerie coincidences have come up with an explanation to account for this string of deaths: an ancient Indian curse, supposedly administered by Tecumseh himself after suffering defeat at the hands in William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. (Tecumseh died in the 1813 Battle of the Thames, again fighting troops led by Harrison.) According to lore, the famed Indian chief cursed the Great White Fathers. No explanation is given for why the chief's curse would only affect one presidency in five, but one cannot, after all, expect the fanciful to cover everything.

Another version attributes the curse to Tenskwatawa (also known as "The Prophet"), a Shawnee medicine man who was half-brother to Tecumseh. The hex was supposedly his revenge for the death of his half-sibling.

"Harrison will die I tell you," the Prophet reportedly said. "And after him, every Great Chief chosen every 20 years thereafter will die. And when each one dies, let everyone remember the death of my people."

12. Actually the supposed curse just says the President won't serve
President Gore wasn't allowed to serve.

The curse is a myth anyway.

Old theory. Something like "they have to be elected in an even year "
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 01:45 AM by applegrove
Did you have to blow dust of the book that came up with that?

3. I've always wondered when Tecumseh's curse was "discovered."
When William Henry Harrison died in office, did people say, "Woooo.... Must be Tecumseh's curse"? Or did the "curse" suddenly come to light in, say the mid-1960's?

7. Tecumseh is being more creative this time
and I live near where Tecumseh was supposedly killed.

He was actually only wounded, and was buried after living a long life, also near here.

8. And it would have to be Reagan to break the curse.
I remember being in high school when he was shot. One kid kept saying that Reagan would have to die in office because of the curse, and when Reagan was shot, the kid walked around gloating for a couple of days. "Oh, he's dead, I tell you. He has to die. It's the curse!"

You wonder, though, if Tecumseh had the power to curse future generations of leaders, why he couldn't have just cursed the army and kept them from killing him...

16. In a way, that classmate was almost right...
... after Reagan was shot, he was the closest we've had to a Terri Schiavo in office. :)

If it weren't for 3x5 cards, the whole world might have known just how gone he actually was....

and nobody took me up on it.

I wanted to start a pool with my classmates . . . what month would Reagan die?

Came close, March 1981.

How is this, if true, any more or less valid a theory than something Pat Robertson or the Pope says?

It's not.

26. Perhaps the curse is still in effect...
Or is it just a coincidence that the Abramoff/Indian Casino scam may be the death knell for Bush. Maybe he won't literally die in office, just that his term will "die" in an impeachment?

27. I suggest that the curse still holds...
The curse wasn't on "the great white fathers" but on us.

Roosevelt died - sucks to be us.
Kennedy died - sucks to be us.
Reagan lived - gee thanks.

Bush? We were never even given the few-week reprieve we were granted by Reagan's hospitalization.

Tecumseh. That rat bastard.

;)

29. I hope Bush lives many years following his term
so he can find out how history will judge him. (Of course that would mean he'd be paying attention, so maybe it wouldn't work out.)
