The Age: "Ill winds of Rita might offer Bush a political ray of sunshine"
Ill winds could blow some good for Bush
By Michael Gawenda
Washington
September 24, 2005

http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/ill-winds-could-blow-some-good-for-bush/2005/09/23/1126982233931.html

AS HURRICANE Rita approaches, just hours from the coast of Texas, some in the White House believe the ill wind might offer President George Bush a political ray of sunshine.

If the mandatory evacuations go according to plan — nearly 2 million people have left the threatened coastal areas — and if state and federal emergency services perform competently, perhaps the memory of the Bush Administration's disastrous bungling over hurricane Katrina will begin to fade.

Perhaps the images of poor black people crying out for food and water in the flooded streets of New Orleans, of bodies floating in the flood, of the old and sick left to die in hospital beds and wheelchairs, will become less raw and wounding.

There is every indication that Bush is determined to show he has learnt the bitter lessons of Katrina. Dressed in sombre dark suits to match his sombre countenance, President Bush has repeated a message over and over: hurricane Rita may cause terrible damage, but it is his job to ensure that everything that can be done to minimise the suffering will be done.

NOTE FROM B_E_B: Yes, I consider this article to be PURE HORSESHIT. "Perhaps the images of poor black people crying out for food and water in the flooded streets of New Orleans, of bodies floating in the flood, of the old and sick left to die in hospital beds and wheelchairs, will become less raw and wounding?" What the FUCK?

:grr:

1. Exploding buses and 100 mile traffic jams
don't sound like images that will make Americans think Bush is any more competant than he was last month.

3. I agree with you
it is pure horseshit. Not only that, he will look even more like he only cares about certain people and states....Florida and Texas. I don't really know and don't really care, his presidency should be based on so many things that so many don't care about or know about. But, about the article, I agree with you. People do not so easily forget those kinds of images.

4. "the mandatory evacuations go according to plan"
Nice plan, how many two SUV families put BOTH the SUVs on the road?
I know that at least the one that was interviewed on NPR did.

12. I know people in Corpus who did that
Both cars on the road, not necessarily SUVs but still it is a waste, although we did not have the problems Houston did.

5. Is that a joke????
Do they really think like this? Thousands of people die, nightmare story of live people being thrown into morgues and left to die, babies dying of thirst and bodies floating in filthy water, some being eaten by dogs, in a US city while he farted around, issueing executive orders to make sure the survivors won't even make a livable wage, is this guy SERIOUS!! Does he really think we will forget and won't demand justice for what happened in NO??

I think it's a joke. And besides, if this storm is as bad as the last one, they've already done exactly the same things they did there.

The poor couldn't get out of Houston, anymore than they could get of NO ~ people begging for help to get out, didn't get any.

What I'm seeing is that if there was a terrorist attack, with no warning, most of those people on the highway, would be dead. Even with so much advance warning, they couldn't have a rule that took buses carrying frail people along the back roads?

I also remember the NYC firemen, complainging that instead of being allowed to help the victims of the disaster, Bush forced some of them to act as props when he visited Mississippi. They were furious about that. There were complaints that he was just in the way, and actually interfered with those who were trying to save lives.

And he better look at the polls, a majority of the people think he is just going to these areas for political purposes.

The tide has turned, no one decent will forget the victims of NO, and he and his cohorts are criminals who need to be prosecuted.

And I think he will go to Crawford to get away from Cindy, so long as it's determined to be safe. Although they'll try to show how brave he is to be there, and how concerned ~ it makes you sick to see their deceptions, and good for that reporter who asked if he would just be in the way!!

11. So does he
Have his hand raised in the traditional one finger salute....or in the sign of the devil? LOOK at the FACE...OMG....I could actually outline the devil, as we interpret him, by outlining that face as it is, in this picture...envision it..from the hair sticking out(horns), to the chin,(pointed) to the eyes,(slanted, slightly open, piglike) to the mouth(cruel, thin lipped, smile)...to the prominent red nose(pointing down)...OMG...(wish I knew how to do this on a computer)
