Sheehan arrested outside WH
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 02:13 PM by welshTerrier2
not sure i can see this either helping or hurting the anti-war effort ... Americans are increasingly opposed to the war ... 52% are now calling for "immediate withdrawal" ... i'm not opposed to it but upping the "noise level" with civil disobedience seems somewhat irrelevant to me ...

WASHINGTON -- Cindy Sheehan, the California woman who has used her son's death in Iraq to spur the anti-war movement, was arrested Monday while protesting outside the White House.

Anti-war protester, and mother of a son who was killed in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan is arrested in front of the White House by U.S. Park Police during a protest in Washington September 26, 2005. Sheehan, whose vigil outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch focused attention on the anti-war movement, was arrested on Monday in a sit-in at the White House after refusing to obey police orders to leave.

Sheehan and several dozen other protesters sat down on the sidewalk after marching along the pedestrian walkway on Pennsylvania Avenue. Police warned them three times that they were breaking the law by failing to move along, then began making arrests.

Sheehan, 48, was the first taken into custody. She stood up and was led to a police vehicle while protesters chanted, "The whole world is watching."

1. Publicity
Seeing Cindy's name at the top of MSNBC's site was good enough for me. Doesn't matter that 52% of the public report being against the Iraq conflict; if it's not in the news, it doesn't exist.

7. no problem ...
i don't oppose the action ... i just question whether it will influence anyone's view of the war ...

i suppose there's value to keeping the war in the headlines but it's not clear that all publicity is good publicity ...

let's hope that these actions don't make it harder for Sheehan and other anti-war activists to gain access to elected Democrats ... most DU'ers have argued elected Dems were wise to stay away from ANSWER's anti-war rally because they would have been "tainted" with the extremist label ... perhaps the same theme will apply here ...

2. A mother of a dead soldier is
arrested, how can this possibly HURT the anti-war effort ? After all the evidence has been forthcoming of the lies to get us there. * refused to answer what noble cause her son died for, and NOW she's arrested. With so many people coming out against the war, on both sides of the aisle. The tide is changing. Give it time.

9. "the Sheeple" ...
52% of "the Sheeple" are calling for immediate withdrawal from Iraq ... it may have taken them far too long to catch on but i suggest we applaud them rather than insult them ...

They have cost us too much. And they have put us in incredible danger. Maybe later I can be nice to them, but not now.

13. BBC has the story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4284684.stm

Ms Sheehan was among a group of about 500 people who staged what they called a "civil disobedience" demonstration to bring more attention to the US military presence in Iraq.

The pavement outside the White House is a restricted area, where people by law must keep moving.

The mother's Texas vigil, prompted by her eldest son's death in action in Iraq in 2004, has made her a figurehead for the anti-war movement in the US. more at link

17. loitering laws
Serve the rich the elites and powerful
By takking away the"public square" from the people.

If there were no loiter laws the dominators ould not be able to harass people who gather..which WAS a part of our consitutiuon

http://aspin.asu.edu/hpn/archives/Jun99/0166.html

Funny the high court sez Gangs can loiter anywhere they want.. but Sheehan Can't? WTF!
