DNC: Bush Must to Stand Up for the American People on Gas Prices

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, President Bush said that given record gas prices, the American people must make sacrifices. Specifically, he said that Americans should avoid driving on trips that are "not essential" and that federal agencies should "curtail nonessential travel." (President Bush, 9/26/05) At the same time, Bush's big oil cronies are seeing record profits and the Bush Administration refuses to take active measures to help reduce the cost of oil for America's working families.

"President Bush should do the right thing for America's working families and stand up to his big oil cronies who are making record profits as gas prices surge," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "American families are sacrificing, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina we are all willing to do our part. President Bush can do more to ease this growing financial burden facing our working families. While he's acknowledged that we need to be less dependent on foreign crude oil, he has failed to act and failed to lead. Democrats have a plan that puts America on the path toward energy independence and will continue to fight for the American people by putting people ahead of profits for Bush's big oil cronies."

The Democratic National Committee also released a new video highlighting President Bush's failure to lead and his broken promise to combat high gas prices. This multimedia release may be viewed at:

5. The GOP is going down under this guy
Gas prices are universal and will piss off Republicans as well as Democrats. And having a President who just tells you to sacrifice when you know there is an exec somewhere NOT sacrificing will just add more expensive gasoline to the fire.

6. What is really significant about Bush's pronunciamento is its...
absolutely brazen "let-them-eat-cake" indifference. More and more, Bush is revealing the true extent to which he's the plutocrats' ultimate wet dream: the most savagely wealth-supremacist president in U.S. history. Apart from asking how his policies can further concentrate plutocratic riches (and inflict further takeback-ruination on anyone who is not part of the oligarchy), Bush gives not a tinker's damn how many people are made to suffer or even die. The aftermath of Katrina was not an accident: what we see in New Orleans is America's Third World future -- a vicious, smirking oligarchy playing and laughing with malicious glee as all the rest of us are ever more desperately impoverished. Finally -- How long Lord O how long -- the Democrats are beginning to officially catch on.
