Poll question: If you were a foreign govenment, would you extradite terrorists here.
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 11:45 PM by genius
The United States refused to extradite airline bomber Posada to Venezuela (where he would receive more humane treatment than anyone extradited to the United States would receive here). Venezuela doesn't even have the death penalty. The United States does have the death peanlty and it has demanded countries opposed to the death penalty extradite people here.

If you were a foreign government, would you extradite people here?

Yikes! Way too many errors.

But my answer is no. I am no fan of Venezuela but every country should handle their own.

2. Other: Yes, as soon as...
THEY extradict Posada and any other terrorist THEY may be harboring to the respective countries where they committed the crimes to stand trial. I'd be willing to accept "but they'll be killed" as an excuse IF the US didn't have the death penalty itself.

Oh, and I'd demand guarantees of no death penalty for the one I'll send.

3. Europe CAN'T
They have a Constitution now with a Bill of Rights that puts ours to shame.

Now I know why I've felt so much more at home and comfortable in Europe (or Cuba) than I ever have here...

5. There's always rendition, though
Sorry, I forgot about rendition. The U.S. just steals people and puts them on the clandestine flights back here.

4. No Can Do
In at least two cases that I am aware of foreign govts. have delivered people wanted here on condition that the maximum penalty they would face would be no greater that the maximum penalty allowed in the delivering country. In both of those cases the people came back facing a maximum term of life in prison.
Other countries need to put the pressure on the U.S. to get rid of the death penalty--so I would not be giving up someone to an immoral penalty of death.
