ACLU's orginal mission?
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 03:26 PM by carrowsboy
This crap appeared in my local paper today? Is this Repuke just making shit up (as per usual)?

If so, I want to be able to repond. Also lots of thanks to the guys who helped me last week. The editor loved it and will be publishing my pro-Sheehan letter in the next few days!

OK, here it goes:

"Republicans, Democrats, and the ACLU

To the editor:

One of the great myths about the American Civil Liberties Union is that it started out as a good, pro-America, pro-liberty organization that somehow got off the track.

From  its very foundation the mission of the ACLU was well defined by its founder, Roger Baldwin: "I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class... Communism is the Goal."

The ACLU seeks a secularized America "with little or no public vestige left of Religious Faith and the Traditional Family." It uses its huge war chest to wage an unrelenting war against any public expression of religious faith, but in particular Christianity and Orthodox Judaism." It will sue public officials to force them to remove Nativity scenes and Christmas trees from most public areas, remove crosses and plaques quoting Bible passages from national parks, censor any mention of GOD in any public discourse.

Remember, communism is the stated Goal. The ACLU has undertaken a relentless legal war against the Boy Scouts of America for daring to "not allow those who openly practice homosexual behavior to be Scoutmasters for teenage boys" and promoting a family friendly and GOD-honoring and respecting environment.

The ACLU has a long history in the defense of partial-birth abortion. Now we have Tim Kaine, a former ACLU lawyer who believes placing "IN GOD WE TRUST" in our classrooms is "ridiculous."

Tim Kaine was once fined $12,500 for filing a frivolous lawsuit. Kaine calls the death penalty "outrageous".

Jerry Kilgore is a passionate defender of our traditional values of GOD, family and patriotism and is solidly ror the death penalty.

Bill Bolling is a solid advocate of Pro-Life issues and unlike his Democrat opponent, Leslie Byrne, Bill Bolling talks the talk and walks the walk when it comes to defending the rights of Unborn Children.

As a member of Virginians For Life, I can assure you national pro-abortion groups like NARAL and Planned Parenthood will flood our state with their Blood Money to stop this Republican Ticket.

Make Virginia a better place to call home, the only choice is to vote Jerry Kilgore, for Governor, Sen. Bill Bolling for Lt. Governor and Del. Bob McDonnell for Attorney General.

Deo Gratias (Thanks To GOD)

Bob Kline

2. To their "they want to ban religion" type point I always say this:
So essentially you believe erecting and upkeeping a wall or exhibit that shows the 10 commandments on tax payer dollars is okay and not a violation of the 1st amendment.

Very well in that case what we're gonna do is we're going to put up a huge wall in front of a major courthouse that states the 4 noble truths of Buddhism or better yet how about selected passages from the Koran?

Oh and uh your tax dollars will be paying for the construction and upkeep of these monuments.

Yea I didn't think you'd like that idea very much you hypocritical shit...

3. Back in the early 70s I worked for the ACLU
and met Roger Baldwin, who was ancient at that time. He had indeed been a radical in the 20s along with a lot of other people. To get an idea of this time, see the movie "Reds" which actually features a brief cameo of him recalling those radical days.

I think the ACLU did a lot of labor union organizing and defending in its early days but during the McCarthy period the ACLU actually purged its communist leaning members and leaders. Later they regretted that they had.

All of that is so long ago and so much as happened since the early days, it's crazy to dwell on it. I didn't think people even mentioned communism any more!

4. Roger Nash Baldwin was a founding father of freedom-perhaps read his bio
Roger Nash Baldwin (January 21, 1884–August 26, 1981) was a noted civil libertarian, pacifist, and social activist who held Communist views in his youth. He was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union and his thirty-year tenure as director of the ACLU marked the period when the modern understanding of the Bill of Rights came into being.

"So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy."
Roger Baldwin (awarded the Medal of Freedom by the President on January 16, 1981, the highest honor that can be given a civilan)

"Roger Baldwin was, in a way, one of America’s founders. The original founders invented the Bill of Rights in the eighteenth century; 130 years later, Baldwin invented a way to enforce it. This is his story and it is told in rich and fascinating detail. A must read for those interested in how rights are acquired and kept."
—Ira Glasser, Former Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Nash_Baldwin

<snip>Roger Nash Baldwin was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts to Frank Fenno Baldwin and Lucy Cushing Nash. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Harvard University; afterwards, he moved to St. Louis, where he worked as a social worker and became chief probation officer of the St. Louis Juvenile Court. He also co-wrote Juvenile Courts and Probation with Bernard Flexner at this time; this book became very influential in its era, and was, in part, the foundation of Baldwin's national reputation.

In St. Louis, Baldwin was also greatly influenced by the radical social movement of the anarchist Emma Goldman; he joined the Industrial Workers of the World, and developed a lasting sympathy for the Soviet Union and Communism that lasted until 1939, when he was disillusioned by the Nazi-Soviet pact and broke off all radical ties. In 1927 he visited the Soviet Union and published a book, entitled Liberty Under the Soviets, which contained extensive praise for the country he later denounced.

Baldwin was a lifelong pacifist; he was a member of the American Union against Militarism, which opposed World War I, and spent a year in jail as a conscientious objector rather than submit to the draft. It was out of the American Union against Militarism (specifically, its legal arm, the National Civil Liberties Bureau) that the ACLU formed after the war, with Baldwin as its first executive director.

As director, Baldwin was integral to the shape of the association's early character; it was under Baldwin's leadership that the ACLU undertook some of its most famous cases, including the Scopes Monkey Trial, the Sacco and Vanzetti murder trial, and its challenge to the ban on James Joyce's Ulysses. Baldwin retired from the ACLU leadership in 1950, but remained active in politics for the rest of his life.

In 1947 General Douglas MacArthur invited him to Japan to foster the growth of civil liberties in that country, where he founded the Japan Civil Liberties Union and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. In 1948, he was invited to Germany and Austria for similar purposes.<snip>

5. About Baldwin and the Communist Party...
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 03:33 PM by mcscajun
In 1947 General Douglas MacArthur invited him to Japan to foster the growth of civil liberties in that country, where he founded the Japan Civil Liberties Union and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. In 1948, he was invited to Germany and Austria for similar purposes.

Baldwin was awarded the Medal of Freedom from President Jimmy Carter on January 16, 1981.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Nash_Baldwin

During the first years of existence, the Civil Liberties Bureau had a close relationship with the Communist Party, but by 1940 co-founder, Roger Baldwin, became disenchanted with it and removed the communist members from the board of the ACLU. The ACLU continues to have a reputation as being a leftist organization, but in fact, it defends people all along the ideological spectrum from ultra-conservative to ultra-liberal if it determines that their civil liberties are being infringed upon.

Other issues the ACLU has championed:
The organization believes that free speech rights must be available to all citizens and residents of the United States. Therefore, it has taken on unpopular cases to defend the free speech rights of clients such as Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazi groups, and NAMBLA, a group which supports legalization of pederasty. A number of controversial cases in which the ACLU has been involved are discussed in the sections below.

The ACLU has defended Frank Snepp formerly of the Central Intelligence Agency (from an attempt of this government agency to gag him) and Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North (convicted on the basis of coerced testimony—a violation of his fifth amendment rights).

7. ACLU mission "is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:"
From the horses mouth:

"The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

Your First Amendment rights
-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.

Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.

Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.

Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

We work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor."

"The ACLU was founded by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, Albert DeSilver and others in 1920. We are nonprofit and nonpartisan and have grown from a roomful of civil liberties activists to an organization of more than 400,000 members and supporters. We handle nearly 6,000 court cases annually from our offices in almost every state..."
