1. About 20 years ago I went to a parenting conference
that Dobson hosted. He was pleasant, clever, and very, very good. His advice was sensible and moderate.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED??

5. he started believing
his own BS.........

apparently he thinks he's achieved some "special level" of "Christianhood" whereby he is "above reproach" and "beyond sin"..

in other words - he's mentally ill.

The man I recently saw on TV bore little resemblance to the man at the conference.

26. Dobson also got a taste of POWER....
and it has been downhill ever since. I heard him a few months ago saying that he was going to remove democratic senators from power....I think he thought he was Moses....

you're right....he's insane.

13. He had some reasonable books on husbands and wives too. but he has gone
over the deep end. That happens to older people sometimes.

My grandfather went really weirdly religious and it seems liek there was a correlation with the onset and development with his Alzheimer's. In fact, a turnabout in religious beliefs in an older person is sometimes a warning signal that Alzheimer's is taking over.

17. How close is your speculation to a diagnosis?
If he in fact has Alzheimer's, then publication of that fact ought to shut him down.

But I realize that asking someone to diagnose without sufficient information is asking them to behave like Sen. Frist.

Still, floating it even as a speculation might well be far more effective then attacking him, . . . especially if it is in fact accurate.

certainly not from a distance. :)

But who knows? Time may tell what is going on with him.

27. He was NEVER sensible or moderate.
His attitude towards male and female sex roles was reactionary; there was nothing moderate about him. However, his folksy charm was very seductive 20 years ago, and it helped make him rich enough to ditch his USC gig and create his own "ministry."

The fact he is rich is why he's gone "off the deep end" politically. He's another corporatist, just like Robertson.

9. Will they show the little sumbitch beating his dog?
He bragged about how he beat the dog as a means of maintaining control over it and then implied this was how a "man" ran his household. I suppose his family members could speak up for themselves if they didn't like what he did but if I ever saw him beating a dog it would be the last dog the fucker would ever beat.

Not particularly relevant just my personal pet peeve about this lowlife.

Why are you highlighting a nutcase (DOBSON of FOCUS ON THE FAMILY) who advocates BEATING HIS DOG to make it behave??? I won't even go into all of his other nutty proclamations (he hates women, democrats, and anyone who is not religious according to HIS BRAND of religion) --you might as well feature Kim Jong Il for all the sense that choice makes...who PAYS you to make these dreadful decisions????

I will change the channel, and we are a Neilsen family. I used to watch the show on occasion, but you totally lost me with that choice. I'm boycotting you.

Focus on the Family" Continues to Use Gay Marriage in Massachusetts as a Means of Making Money
By MassNews Staff
January 6, 2003

Focus on the Family continues to use Margaret Marshall's ruling on gay marriage as a way to make more money.

...Yesterday, many households in the state received two mailings from the Focus subsidiary, the Family Research Council. (That group fired its President, Atty. Ken Connor, last year because he was not following the instructions from Focus.)

...Mailing #1 - One of yesterday's mailings went nationwide. It asked people across the entire country to send money so that FRC could do even more to fight gay marriage here in Massachusetts. Have you noticed anything that FRC is doing to help in this state?

19. i think i wil send this to abc.... suggestthey read what dobson represent
Dobson advocates the spanking of children from 15-18 months to eight years old. According to Dobson, "pain is a marvelous purifier." (Dare to Discipline, p.6) He argues that "it is not necessary to beat the child into submission; a little bit of pain goes a long way for a young child. However, the spanking should be of sufficient magnitude to cause the child to cry genuinely." (Ibid., p.7.)

In The Strong-Willed Child (p.73), Dobson writes: "Some strong-willed children absolutely demand to be spanked, and their wishes should be granted." As for the magnitude of the spanking, he argues that "two or three stinging strokes on the legs or buttocks with a switch are usually sufficient to emphasize the point, 'You must obey me.'" (The Strong-Willed Child, pp. 53-4.)

Dobson directly connects parental authority to social authority: "By learning to yield to the loving authority...of his parents, a child learns to submit to other forms of authority which will confront him later in his life -- his teachers, school principal, police, neighbors and employers." (The Strong-Willed Child, p. 235.)

He frequently portrays the child as the natural enemy of the parent and emphasizes that it is necessary to punish the child to uphold parental authority. "When you are defiantly challenged, win decisively." (Dare to Discipline, p. 36.)

In The Strong-Willed Child, Dobson draws a strong analogy between child rearing and dog rearing. He tells a story in which the family dog refuses to leave his resting place on the lid of the toilet seat. According to Dobson, a "vicious fight" between him and the dog resulted in which he "fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt ." He concludes that "just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, so will a little child--only more so." (emphasis Dobson)

To deal with crying, Dobson recommends: "Real crying usually lasts two minutes or less but may continue for five. After that point, the child is merely complaining, and the change can be recognized in the tone and intensity of his voice. I would require him to stop the protest crying, usually by offering him a little more of whatever caused the original tears." <2>

30. here's the letter I........
emaiiled to ABC

To Whom it may Concern:

I am dismayed that you will be giving air time on "Extreme Makeover-Home Edition" to a person as divisive and dangerous as James Dobson. This is a man who has played an enormous role in polarizing this nation and his behavior and his pronouncements against homosexuality and other hot button social issues are unforgivable. That ABC would condone such behavior is equally unforgivable. I can assure you that I will not be watching and though I enjoy several of your programs, I won't be watching those either.

You should familiarize yourself with Dobson's writings and speeches and see for yourself that giving this man a forum will only promote the division this country does not need. Thank you, from one viewer who will be tuning out ABC.
