Miers Briefed Bush On Famous Bin Laden Memo

Miers Briefed Bush on Famous Bin Laden Memo, But Newspapers Handle the AP Photo Quite Differently

By E&P Staff

Published: October 04, 2005 10:45 AM ET

NEW YORK On its front page Tuesday, The New York Times published a photo of new U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers going over a briefing paper with President George W. Bush at his Crawford ranch “in August 2001,” the caption reads.

USA Today and the Boston Globe carried the photo labeled simply “2001,” but many other newspapers ran the picture in print or on the Web with a more precise date: Aug. 6, 2001.

Does that date sound familiar? Indeed, that was the date, a little over a month before 9/11, that President Bush was briefed on the now-famous “PDB” that declared that Osama Bin Laden was “determined” to attack the U.S. homeland, perhaps with hijacked planes. But does that mean that Miers had anything to do with that briefing?

As it turns out, yes, according to Tuesday's Los Angeles Times. An article by Richard A. Serrano and Scott Gold observes that early in the Bush presidency “Miers assumed such an insider role that in 2001 it was she who handed Bush the crucial 'presidential daily briefing' hinting at terrorist plots against America just a month before the Sept. 11 attacks.”

8. Wonder what she's saying to him in that photo?
"Don't worry about this, George. It's just more hysteria about that Bin-Whatsisname guy... Some silliness about driving jet-planes into big buildings..."

5. I heard a wonk say this on the radio last night
I was listening to public radio, and I believe that NPR programming was still on.

All I caught was that Miers was part of the inner circle, and responsible for giving the president his daily briefings.

I immediately thought of that August memo, and wondered what role she had in handling it, if any.

Between this and the revelations about her law firm money laundering, I hope her ship sinks, and fast.

10. Well, your hunch was correct! And it's captured in a nice
photo of her and Junior down on the "ranch". (Wonder if she shared the women's bunkhouse with Condi and Karen while visiting? Or maybe he calls it his "harem"...)

7. Is anybody going to notify a Dem on the Senate Judiciary committee
so they can ignore it?

That would be cool - there would be no win situation for her there.

"How did he react?"

She could tell the truth - "He blew it off."

Or she could blatantly lie - "He ordered it investigated thoroughly . . ."

Looking over sheets of paper, likely following along with a briefing during a meeting?

32. According to picture in slide show (from post # 21 below)
the men are Steve Biegun, National Security Staff, and Joe Hagen, Deputy Chief of Staff.
They all look hard at work protecting us, don't they?

No wonder Bin Laden was successful. He could have sent a telegram to Smirk explaining
exactly what the plans were in detail, and nothing would have changed.

19. You bring up the obvious next question....
If this is THE memo, did she have the security clearance to read it? From what I understand, the memo wasn't declassified until April, 10 2004.

How many cronies have the ability to view classified documents?

28. Miers and Bush were ALSO together in Florida on 9/11
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 09:45 PM by SpiralHawk
After Bush finally finished his leisurely reading of "My Pet Goat" Miers "prepared" his "remarks" - a seminal moment in the DESTINY of the USA.

I believe this all needs to be THOROUGHLY PROBED.

30. i asked this in another thread: why is this a big deal?
Miers was staff secretary. The staff secretary is the last substantive control point before papers reach the president. Unless the PDB was classified above the point where she would see it (a possibility, but probably unlikely), then she saw it. But anyone could've figured that out from day one. Its what the staff secretary does. So why is this "news"?
