So, why did Roe of Roe V. Wade eventually turn into an anti-abortionist? |
|
It's well know that Norma McCovey is, ironically, now a "pro-life" advocate.
I'm wondering why this happened, although here's what I think:
Basically, being the reason abortions were legalized (in RW'ers eyes, anyway) the hard-right repukes hounded her and hounded her until she gave and became an anti-choicer.

2. I doubt she was hounded into it |
|
This was a woman who in essence broke a state law in order to establish constitutional protections for women -- doesn't sound like someone who would easily be intimidated. Not to mention, since the anti-choice crowd is definitely in the minority, if she were pressured into it there would be much less pressure now and she would naturally switch back.
IIRC, she found religion and changed her stance all on her own. I have no doubt that her role in the past directly contributes to any virulence on her part now.

6. What law did she break? |

She gave birth to the child & gave her up for adoption.
She'd had a very hard life & thought the pro-choice people weren't very nice to her. Operation Rescue's National Director personally converted her but she has since turned Roman Catholic.

Edited to add: She said she had been "pressured" to file the case. Then she criticized her lawyer for not getting her to an abortionist in time. The she "saw the light." (She changes her mind a lot.)

I had a faulty recollection that she had the abortion and challenged her conviction. My bad.

3. She was "Born Again", and has become a RW Christian... |
|
a decision I feel was hers to make, but I do not respect her need to try and find absolution with her God by disavowing her role in the right to Choice for American women, nor do I appreciate her aligning herself with the people trying to take that Right away from us now.

7. If she can't be sure about her decision to have an abortion, how |
|
can she be sure about her decision to be a RW Christian?
I'm just saying. Regrets, we all have a few.

4. Remind me....did she get an abortion? Her case certainly didn't |
|
get heard before her pregnancy ended, one way or another. And who knows why people change their minds...which Bush touched upon today at his press conference. He said he doesn't want a Justice who will change their minds once on the court. And this guy is President.

She claimed she had been raped and forced to carry the child to term because of Texas' restrictive law. She sued on the basis of not being able to get an abortion.
She actually wasn't raped, but claims like that were common then in order for women to get abortions.
Norma McCorvey has always struck me as being just a tad bit "off"; she's supposedly "born again" yet is a lesbian, as I recall it.

8. You can probably find the entire story yourself |
|
by Googling her name.
In brief, a religious conversion caused her to re-examine her life and the entire abortion issue and conclude that abortion is wrong.
I don't recall her saying that anyone had "hounded her" to change. She does say the lawyers who talked her into being "Roe" used her and lied to her.

because she is strange.
An article from many years ago in Good Housekeeping had the story of Roe v. Wade, and McCorvey was NOT used.
I think she is being used now.
