Did you ever think that the sudden attention by Bush for the Bird Flu problems may just be a distraction away from his other problems like...say...the Fitzgerald Grand Jury? Nah. He's NEVER done that.

Most experts believe an avian flu pandemic will occur - but it could be 50 years from now. There's absolutely no evidence that the virus can be spread effectively from human to human right now - it's just a waiting game right now.
I am wondering why there's so much 'hysteria' about it right now.

or it could be this season.
This is an extraordinarily lethal flu in its current form, though its fatality rate would probably drop off as it became person-to-person transmissable. There may be a little of the distraction factor working, but the fact is this flu has been around for seven years and has been growing and spreading that whole time. As mutable as the flu virus is, a jump to humans is all but inevitable. If it were to attain the spread of the 1918 flu, 80,000,000 Americans would catch it. Spanish Flu killed 2% - that would be 1.6 million dead; at the current 50% that would be 40 million killed in the US alone.
It is not a matter of if; just a matter of when. And as scary as this is, the prospect of facing it with this administration in power is absolutely terrifying.

11. 100% in agreement with this post |

although it assumes that spreading to a human host would confer less virulence. Pray to God that is the case. Although the Bush administraion is definitely using this as a distraction and as part of their fear mongering campaign, the Chinese had the good sense, eventually, to sound the alarm when they couldn't control it with propaganda and tight control of the media. We can't just keep killing millions of animals. Yet another reason why Bush and his one party system of elitism, corruption and cronyism needs to be impeached out NOW.

3. Maybe, but if that means they're preparing for it, then I'll take it. |

Yes, he uses whatever works to distract. But I also believe the bird flu has the potential to be a very serious problem. So, no, I don't think he's making up the dangers of this flu. I know quite a few people involved with health organizations and WHO, etc. and they take this flu very seriously.

6. He must have been slipped this month's National Geographic and |

told to brush up. It's clear from his comments, that his info is the same as the article. You don't think he is holding meetings with the Center for Disease Control, do you?

7. Yep, trying something other than a "terrorist fear alert". From now |
|
on we will be getting the "bird flu alerts".
