Republicans' 2006 Senate prospects sour
http://thehill.com/thehill/export/TheHill/News/Campaign/100505.html

This is not how Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) hoped things would turn out.

High-profile candidates she hoped could defeat incumbent Democrats are shying away from 2006, and some of her own Republican colleagues are looking vulnerable.

On Monday, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) bowed out of a race next year against Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.). Late last week, Gov. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said he wouldn’t challenge Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) next year.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which Dole chairs, has failed to recruit candidates it considers top-tier in Michigan, Florida and Vermont; no one is challenging Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.); and Republicans are embroiled in primaries in Nebraska and Rhode Island.

Tennessee, which has twice backed President Bush, is giving some Republicans heartburn, with the GOP Senate contenders attacking their opponents’ conservative credentials while Rep. Harold Ford (D-Tenn.) outfundraises his Republican rivals and aggressively canvasses the state.

1. Attack on all fronts, attack! this is good news.
just a few weeks ago it looked like we wouldn't be able to make any gains at all in the Senate... that we'd have to be satisfied in taking the House back. But now... I mean we can run a full court press.

2. That's very encouraging.
But still counts for nothing if your vote can't be assured.

Pen and paper, hand counted at each precinct.

No machines below state level involved in any vote accumulation. None.

Call Canada the equivalent of 1 state. As Canada can have open, timely and successful paper elections so can any state.
There is the tested and proven model to copy, and the only immediate answer to all the significant problems.
In Canada the people participate (rather than the rabid partisans) and make their elections work.

Time is running out.
Only the people will make it happen in America.

America isn't actually the best at everything, and there is no shame in admitting that her cousins over the border have done something better. I'm sure that many non-partisan Canadians could cross the border and teach Americans how to run it properly.

I don't believe there is a more expedient, affordable or rapid option available, that can assure the people of a clean election next year.

Spurt
