Republican Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor
Republican Congress Seeks to Slash Food Aid for Poor
October 5th, 2005

So much for the poverty debate that some thought might happen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. On Thursday, the Senate Agriculture Committee led by Saxby Chambliss is scheduled to vote on slashes to “food programs for the poor by $574 million and subsidies and conservation programs by $1 billion each.”

The plan by Senate Agriculture Committee chairman Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., would reduce farmers’ payments by 2.5 percent across the board, slashing spending by $1.145 billion over five years. That’s half the 5 percent the Bush administration sought earlier this year.

The $574 million cut in food stamps would come from restricting access to this benefit for certain families that receive other government assistance. The restriction would shut an estimated 300,000 people out of the program.

indicate how many children will be affected by this. I guess it goes down easier if you make believe that this will just apply to those adults who are just too lazy to get off their backsides and be productive.

More proof that their "right-to-life" agenda stops at birth.

Edited for clarity.

5. Nominated -- very important development. Dubya needs to be asked about
this aggressively by the press. Oh wait--this JUST MISSED his semi-annual press conference.
