McClellan: God DID NOT tell Junior to invade Iraq..."never made comments"
White House denies Bush God claim

The White House has dismissed as "absurd" allegations made in a BBC TV series that President Bush claimed God told him to invade Iraq. "He's never made such comments," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. The comments were attributed to Mr Bush by the Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath in the upcoming TV series Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs. Mr Shaath said that in a 2003 meeting with Mr Bush, the US president said he was "driven with a mission from God".

Holy war? "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan. And I did, and then God would tell me, George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq... And I did.

"'And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East. And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who attended the meeting in June 2003 too, also appears on the documentary series to recount how Mr Bush told him: "I have a moral and religious obligation. So I will get you a Palestinian state."

In other Scott McClellan news: Karl Rove DID NOT LEAK the name of a CIA agent to the media.

1. Gott mit Uns, the rhetoric roots of Fearless Leader

President Bush told Texas evangelist James Robinson that “I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can’t explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen . . . I know it won’t be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.”

With 49.3% of New York City residents in a recent Zogby poll believing that some people in our government knew of the 911 attack in advance and allowed it to happen, the President as right-wing evangelical prophet is under siege in his Madison Square Garden bunker. Convention watchers should take careful note of the theocratic nationalist rhetoric at the Republican convention this week.

When was the last time a Western nation had a leader so obsessed with God and claiming God was on our side?

4. Robison is a dick and a half, the lowest of the low, an utter scumbag.

I saw the clip of Bunnypants on his show. I saw Bush sit there with his eyes closed ever-so-tight as Robison and his wife prayed for him to have the strength and courage to do what God wanted him to do.

They should have PRAYED HARDER.

3. His use of the word "get" is so strange.
Is that even a word one uses when discussing international relations in this context. Only * would ever say something like that. It's as if he's going to the store "to get some milk." He's just gonna get it.

5. for such a religous man didn't he just take the lords name in vain
"And by God I'm gonna do it"

Tsk Tsk

I'm not religous so I can use it in vain all I want but for someone who believes in a heaven and a hell and good and evil I think he should refrain from doing such things. Unless he already knows he's going to hell for all the innocents he has killed.

11. Can we hear it straight from the horse's mouth?
It's not like Bush doesn't invoke God on a routine basis on behalf of his crackpot policies, something which makes the Almighty mighty annoyed. Or so I've heard. Will Bush specifically state that God did not tell him to invade Afghanistan or Iraq? I'm reminded of an old trick that Arafat used to use: He'd say something in English which sounded good to Western ears but which he knew his supporters wouldn't like. But he wouldn't say the same thing in Arabic, and he could always blame critical reports on bad translations or dismiss them out of hand. Palestinians who didn't know English wouldn't know the difference, and would continue to support Arafat.

Bush makes these carefully worded statements to signal to his supporters that despite all appearances to the contrary, he's really a man of God, and is closely in touch with the Creator, a ruse which greatly comforts the gullible religious in his base. If Bush was forced to recant or deny these statements personally and publicly, it would do a great deal of harm to his standing with that segment.

So, can't we hear Bush himself deny making these statements?
