VIDEO: Dems Chant 'Shame! Shame!' as GOP Bullies House Vote
Vote Held Open Until Republicans Received Margin of Victory, Then Promptly Shut Down!

Guest blogged by David Edwards

Republicans House members DeLay, Barton, Hastert and Blunt held the vote open on a controversial energy bill until they were able twist enough arms for the bill to pass.

Although, only 5 minutes are allotted for voting, Republicans refused to close the voting for 40 minutes until enough votes had switched to pass the energy bill which will gut environmental standards in favor of building more oil refineries.

As reported by Reuters:

When over two dozen Republicans initially voted no, DeLay, Barton, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and new Majority Leader Roy Blunt circled the chamber to cajole holdouts.

Republican Wayne Gilchrest of Maryland was the last to switch. With the tally stuck at 211-211, Gilchrest changed his vote, making it 212-210. Barton promptly shook his hand and Republican Mike Simpson, who presided over the vote, gaveled it to an end.

Several Democrats protested that the vote was held open. "I am informed that every member of Congress who is in town has voted," Democratic whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland said at one point, when the tally was 210 yes, 214 no.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi also complained, saying the proceedings brought "dishonor to the House."

3. This bill was soooo close. Kudos to our Dem Rep's.
And the shouts of "shame, shame, shame" were a welcome addition in the face of the Republican maneuver to shut it down.

7. DFW Star-Telegram report
"What you saw on the House floor this afternoon was a shameless display of the Republican culture of corruption, as it exists in the House of Representatives," said House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

"A vote that was supposed to take five minutes took more than nine times that long because the indicted Republican leader of the House of Representatives needed extra time to twist the arms necessary to pass a bill that is against the interests of the American people, against consumers, against taxpayers, and against the environment."

11. Nancy Pelosi is at her best in the face of GOP atrocities...
She's one of those people who gets to the point where she says "enough is enough," and then she lets it rip.

I'd like to see her on fire more often, whether there's a catalyst or not.

13. CNN DISTORTS THE ISSUE
everything I've read says that the dems' position is fighting GIVEAWAYS TO BIG OIL.

the CNN analyst says NOTHING about that, absolutely NOTHING about that, he frames it as the GOP trying to lower gas prices vs. the dems concerned about the environment.

15. CNN misses the point about not building anymore refineries
in this country.....Big Oil realizes that we are at Peak Oil...there simply isn't enough oil left on this planet to justify the cost of building another refinery.....

maybe some of those in New Orleans were damage and they want us, the taxpayers, to pay for them.

Big Biz spends none of their money on capital projects anymore....they make us middle and working classes pay for them....damn, do I hate Corporations.

26. They did miss the point.
It isn't JUST about the environment.

The oil companies are getting rich off of profits from high gas prices. In what alternate reality can we justify giving away tax dollars for more refineries?

Tax dollars to help with public transportation or help poor people pay for gas, I can see. Tax dollars to help billion dollar oil companies build refineries? It's flushing money down the toilet. They may build more refineries, but they won't lower the prices.

Dems need to let Americans who do not avidly follow the workings of politics know that a GOP vote is a vote against democracy.

Edited on Fri Oct-07-05 09:09 PM by Coloradan4Truth
I am LIVID at your reporting on the vote today in the house for the controversial energy bill! The democrats are fighting giveaways to big oil, but yet you don't mention that, but spin the story as the republicans are trying to bring down gas prices and the democrats are concerned about the environment.

Oil companies are currently making RECORD PROFITS at the expense of the American people... They do not need government welfare, even if some of their refineries were damaged in the hurricanes. BY THE WAY, you seem to forget that gas prices were at record highs even before the hurricanes. Our paying for some new refineries IS NOT GOING TO LOWER GAS PRICES.

CNN, your reporting SUCKS, you'd better get with it before the American people figure you out too, and your ratings go down the same toilet the President's have.

Plus, now I should go send a thank you note to Nancy Pelosi
